West Ham United face Aston Villa at Villa Park this Sunday, and David Moyes believes his side 'need good performances' if they want to win.

After three league games this season, West Ham sit bottom of the table with zero points. Therefore, it is vital the Hammers win this upcoming clash, if they want to challenge for European football once again.

However, Aston Villa have also made a poor start to the season, sitting in 13th with just three points. Pressure is building on Steven Gerrard to turn it around, so the London club will be hopeful they can take advantage of the situation.

The Scottish manager will be hoping the likes of Jarred Bowen and Declan Rice can change the dynamic of the game.

  • Latest signing must be patient

When West Ham signed Gianluca Scamacca this Summer for £27 million (transfermarkt), many believed he would make an immediate impact.

The Italian had built an impressive reputation across Europe after scoring sixteen goals last season (transfermarkt). However, the new signing is yet to start a Premier League match this season.

Michail Antonio has been preferred up front, despite the Jamaican struggling to find the back of the net.

Moyes said: "He's been knocking on the door for a while. We have to try and look at him and see the right games for him. We don't need to rush him but he's getting ready"

“It’s not just his fitness, getting him ready, it’s getting him ready for Premier League football. It’s a big change.

Despite a poor start to the season, David Moyes believes the Villans are still a dangerous side to face.

Last Week, Steven Gerrard's side lost 3-1 to Crystal Palace. It was a lacklustre display from the former European Champions, which has increased the pressure on the English manager.

But, with the likes of Danny Ings and Philippe Coutinho leading the line, Moyes is still wary of the opposition.

He said: "Really difficult game at Aston Villa. Hugely important, will do everything we can to get started. Want to win.

"Need good performances. Need to up our performance level. Seeing signs of improvement."

"Have a really good side. Have good players, good team, Villa will have a good season. We have to try and go there and win ourselves"

  • The latest on injuries

West Ham have sometimes been reliant on their key players in recent years, but have usually been fortunate with injuries.

David Moyes had good news for West Ham fans within the press conference. Angelo Ogbonna is getting closer to a Premier League return. He completed his first 90 minutes last night since suffering an ACL injury last November.

He said: “We're getting people back fit. I don't think we've picked up any issues from our midweek encounter, so hopefully we'll all be okay.”

  • Recent success within the club

On Sunday, the Hammers will become the ninth side to reach 1000 Premier League games. Ever since the league's creation, West Ham have endured some rocky spells.

But, in recent years, West Ham have shown impressive form, which has seen them qualify for European football two years in a row.

This is partially due to the managerial skills of David Moyes. He has been at the helm of a vast transition within the club. This has led the club from relegation candidates to the 'best of the rest'.

He said: "I'm pleased how we've brought the club along recently. We've knuckled down, kept at it and club have grown as well. We are trying to be one of the big club.

"Want to be a big club in the transfer market. Doing things well off the pitch, in the community. What's important is the results on the pitch."

West Ham United face Aston Villa at Villa Park this Sunday at 2 pm BST. With both sides wanting to improve their form, it is bound to be a thrilling match between two of the biggest teams in the country.
