The US Men's National Team picked up a valuable point, turning in a solid performance in playing out a goalless draw against a tepid England at the 2022 World Cup.

Outplaying a lackluster Three Lions side for most of their Group B clash, the Stars and Stripes defended resolutely while bossing the game for long periods with their energy, pace, creativity and work rate.

Harry Maguire was the rock in the England defense, but Gareth Southgate's men were fortunate not to be behind twice in the first half as Weston McKennie missed an easy chance and Christian Pulisic struck the crossbar with his shot.

Mason Mount has one of the few good chances for England, forcing a fine save out of Matt Turner, but the 2018 World Cup semifinalists showed none of the attacking flair or eye for goal as they did in their opening match against Iran.

The Three Lions are still in a good position to qualify for the knockout stages, needing to avoid a four-goal defeat against neighbors Wales to progress to the last 16.

For Gregg Berhalter's side, victory over Iran next Tuesday will see USA advance to the knockout stages as they remain unbeaten against England at the World Cup, having picked up a win and two draws.

Story of the match

After a thorough and decisive win over Iran, England came out and dominated the opening stages of this match and Bukayo Saka played a cut-back to Harry Kane, who saw his goal-bound shot blocked by Walker Zimmerman.

Maguire then dribbled into the USA box and found Mount, but he could only shoot over.

Captain Tyler Adams proved to be another inspirational figure in the midfield, vibrant in attack and shielding the back-line from any rare forays forward by England.

The Three Lions then looked unsure in possession, beaten for pace and speed by the Stars and Stripes, Haji Wright, making his first-ever World Cup start, firing over.

McKennie then wasted a good chance from nine yards out and former England youth international Yunus Musah saw his strike deflected into the path of Three Lions goalkeeper Jordan Pickford.

On 33 minutes, the excellent Pulisic found a pocket of space just inside the penalty area. He smashed his left-footed shot from just inside the box past the diving Pickford, but against the crossbar.

USA kept up the pressure, Maguire needing to block a dangerous effort from Sergino Dest and Pulisic headed wide as the Three Lions were just happy to see the halftime interval.

Not much changed when the teams returned to the Al-Bayt Stadium, John Stones blocking from Wright, McKennie shooting over for a second time and Pulisic's dig deflecting wide.

After a run of five successive corners, Southgate made a double change in the 68th minute, Jordan Henderson and Jack Grealish coming on for the poor Raheem Sterling and Jude Bellingham.

Berhalter countered seven minutes later, throwing on Josh Sargent and Shaq Moore in place of McKennie and Dest.

Reyna, controversially left on the bench against Wales, finally entered in the 83rd minute along with Josh Sargent to freshen up the USA attack.

Late on, Grealish won a pair of free kicks in the Stars and Stripes box and Kane saw his header from a Luke Shaw cross fly wide in a performance that can only be described as drab at best and dismal at worst.

Player of the match: Christian Pulisic

His playing time having recently been limited at Chelsea, the USA talisman ran rings around England. He distributed the ball quickly to lead the attack, drove the Stars and Stripes forward and was unlucky not to score.
