Kylian Mbappe was the hero for France once again, as his brace secured a 2-1 win for Les Bleus against Denmark to secure their place in the next round.

France have become the first team to qualify for the round of 16, winning Group D, but their performance was far from perfect.

Denmark's struggles in front of goal continued, which may well prove costly, as they sit third in the group, needing a win against Australia to have any chance of progressing in their next game.

Here are the main takeaway's from the encounter:

Les Bleus made good use of the wide areas

Often France found themselves causing Denmark all sorts of problems when they played the ball out wide, often in search of the head of Olivier Giroud.

It is no surprise Didier Deschamps' side were aiming for the former Arsenal and Chelsea striker, as he remains only a goal away from breaking the all-time goal scoring record for France.

He had a couple of good chances to head home in the first half, namely in the 39th minute when he nodded wide under pressure.

Theo Hernandez cut the ball back to Mbappe for the opening goal in the 61st minute from the byline, showing just how dangerous France can be from out wide.

It was France's star striker who was on the end of another cross to give his side a late lead against The White and Reds.

Ousmane Dembele provided a threat driving down the wing, putting the ball into the box frequently as well.

If the reigning champions can take their chances, which they failed to do at times on Saturday evening, they will be a real problem for any defence they face.

France struggled to defend out wide

Ironically, the main weakness for Les Bleus appears to be where they are most effective offensively- out wide.

Christensen's equaliser came from a corner played into the box which was not well dealt with.

Hugo Lloris was later forced into making a smart stop from a driven ball into the box, as France looked to be particularly vulnerable when dealing with or preventing balls into the box.

Martin Braithwaite made the weakness even more apparent, when he fired just wide after being allowed to shoot from a ball into the area.

The problem had already been highlighted in their opening group stage game, where Craig Goodwin was able to slot home from a cross.

They have undoubtedly suffered injuries to their first-choice players which do not help in this case such as Lucas Hernandez at left back, who suffered an ACL injury in the opening game against Australia.

However, Les Bleus needed to do better defending out wide and heading the ball clear.

With Lloris having a more standoffish approach towards balls into the box, the central defenders will need to improve to avoid further issues being created later on in tournament out wide.

The White and Reds struggled to create many real chances again

Barring the goal from the corner, which was well taken by Christensen, Denmark had a difficult time when it came to creating chances against France.

With the likes of Christian Eriksen and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in the middle of the park, Denmark should arguably be better at creating openings, however they have had little success so far in Qatar.

Scoring just once so far in this World Cup in two outings, the Euro 2020 semi-finalists have struggled to emulate their goal scoring form from their last major tournament.

They have passed up on some fantastic chances, even if the quantity of those opportunities have been few and far between.

It will certainly be a big regret for Kasper Hjulmand's side if they crash out of Group D, with Australia currently ahead of them with one game left.

They will need to beat The Socceroos and hope France can be successful against Tunisia on match day three if they want to make the round of 16 in Qatar.

Denmark need to improve if they want to qualify

It was a dismal showing from Denmark, who will be left ruing their missed chances against Tunisia in their opening game of the tournament.

Hjulmand's side struggled to take control of the midfield battle, were weak defensively and appeared to switch off for both of the goals they let in and were no better offensively.

The Scandanavian side did not offer enough in any area of the pitch, and will need to be better to progress.

Perhaps gaining a better grip of possession will be necessary in order to create enough chances to score, the most pressing issue Denmark seem to have.
