The last match on Centre Court on day two was a face off between the women’s fifth seed and the Chinese number two. The latter went off to a flying start, breaking her opponent twice to race to a 4-1 lead. A third consecutive women’s upset seemed to be imminent and looming (Bouchard and Halep were upset by players outside the top 100) as Caroline Wozniacki’s unforced error count rose and she was unable to get a foothold into the match. Saisai Zheng’s spirited offense was commendable, but it was not good enough as Wozniacki promptly turned the tables to swing the momentum into her favor. The Dane broke back twice to take the set to 5-5, and then proceeded to break Zheng in her next service game to clinch the close set 7-5.

The reversal caused Zheng to lose focus as she ended up hitting fourteen unforced errors in the next set, and only won 20 percent of her second serve points. This became key for Wozniacki who dominated the return games as well as her service games, converting three out of her five break point opportunities to win the set and match with a 6-0. As close as the first set was, the fifth seed did not let Zheng back into the match by any stretch in the second.

Wozniacki will be pleased with her performance and her comeback, using her ability from today to overcome the hiccup from the first set to surge forward in her Wimbledon campaign. The Championships is the only Grand Slam in which Wozniacki has not made it past the fourth round so the straight sets victory should give her confidence going forward. More so, she can rely on her serve as she managed to get 76 percent of her first serves in, winning 72 percent of her first serve points. Her next opponent is Denisa Allertova from the Czech Republic.
