Former US Open champion Juan Martin del Potro is more committed than ever to coming back after getting another wrist surgery. This surgery was his third on his left wrist and fourth in total.

Del Potro ready to return to tennis

The Argentine said in a Facebook post that the hardest moments of his career are gone and that it was difficult for him to watch tennis on TV. He also said he has “great expectations for a new stage (of his career) that will begin this week.”

The third surgery on his left wrist was done so he could continue to hit that explosive, flat two-handed backhand of his. He said, “Today I am more committed than ever to trying to come back. No more doubts or question marks. A new career for me starts today."

The 2009 US Open champion returned earlier this year after the wrist injury hampered his 2014 season. His goal was to play through the season pain-free in the wrist.

His short 2015 season

He started off his season in Sydney as a warmup tournament to the Australian Open. He took a wildcard into the event and started off on winning terms with a victory over Sergiy Stakhovsky. He then took out top-seeded Fabio Fognini in three sets before qualifier Mikhail Kukushkin took him out in two tight tiebreakers.

After that, it was looking likely he was headed to Melbourne Park for the Australian Open but withdrew not too long before the tournament because of the wrist injury. He would not play again until the Miami Masters where he lost to Canadian Vasek Pospisil in the opening round. Since then, he has yet to take the court and confirmed he would be getting another wrist surgery in June.

Currently ranked 570, it’s going to be a “long and winding road” for del Potro to get back to his top ten ranking, especially with the emergence of the young guns like Raonic and Dimitrov. It will also be difficult for him to work his way back with a new team. Last week, del Potro split from longtime head coach Franco Davin and his longtime trainer Martiniano Orazi.

Hopefully the tennis universe sees DelPo work his way back to the top of his game once again. The lovable giant from Tandil has given us some of the most memorable matches in recent memory so seeing him play pain-free would be a sight to see.
