Nick Kyrgios has withdrawn from the tournament in Rotterdam due to a wrist injury. The ATP 500 event which is set to take place next week, has been hit with two major injury hits to the field. The controversial Aussie has been one of the injury hits, however, the star of the field originally, Roger Federer, is also out. Federer will be missing the event after undergoing surgery for his meniscus.

Dwindling Rotterdam Field

The wrist injury from the Aussie came as a surprise since he was not carrying anything during the Australian Open and straight away after the tournament. The Australian lost in the third round to eventual quarterfinalist Tomas Berdych.

The shocker of the day was when Roger Federer withdrew from the event as well. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery to repair a torn meniscus. The Swiss maestro has not just withdrawn from the event in Rotterdam, he’s also unable to defend his title in Dubai. Federer defeated world number one Novak Djokovic last year for the title in the final ATP 500 event of February.

What’s Left Of The Rotterdam Field

The stars and entertainers may not be in the tournament, however, the tournament still has a number of top players in it. Two-time Wimbledon semifinalist Richard Gasquet is the highest-ranked player left in the draw with 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic following suit. The French have a strong showing in Rotterdam placing three Frenchman within the top eight of the current crop of players in the field. Those players are Gilles Simon, Benoit Paire, and Gael Monfils.

The Dutch field two players at the Rotterdam Open. Thiemo de Bakker and Robin Haase look to spoil the party of the top seeds and give the hometown crowd something to root for. The last Dutch champion was Jan Siemerink in 1998 when he defeated Thomas Johansson in the final.
