Former world number one Caroline Wozniacki will be looking to break into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon for the first time in her career.

Unfortunately, for the Dane, an ankle injury ruled her out for the entire clay court season and a poor set of results has led to her inevitable slide down the rankings and to be unseeded at big tournaments.

Svetlana Kuznetsova, the 13th seed has had a good season in 2016 as she reached the final of the Miami Open defeating the three-time defending champion Serena Williams in the process.

The Russian had a good Roland Garros, bowing out in the fourth round losing to eventual French Open  champion Garbine Muguruza, in which was a quality match between two champions.

Wimbledon hasn't been a happy hunting ground for the Russian in recent years, but she's reached the quarterfinals on three occasions in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

Kuznetsova lost in the second round in 2010 and last year, a third round finish in 2011 and two first round exits in 2012 and 2014.

The 13th seed has a tough opening round match with Wozniacki, which could take a lot of the Russian going forward in this tournament but the veteran is physically fit.

Should she reach the second round, Britain's Tara Moore or former French Open quarterfinalist Alison Van Uytvanck awaits and a projected third round meeting with Sloane Stephens  is on the cards.

Defending champion Serena Williams , (Wozniacki's best friend) is the Russian's projected fourth round opponent.

11th seed Timea Bacsinszky, last year's quarterfinalist or 27th seed CoCo Vandeweghe are possible quarterfinal opponents for Kuznetsova, which are tricky matches but it is a great opportunity for the Russian to make the semifinals.

2012 finalist Agnieszka Radwanska or two-time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova are potential semifinal adversaries for the Russian.

Should Kuznetsova reach her first final in a slam since 2009, she could play Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber, French Open champion Garbine Muguruza or five-time champion Venus Williams.

The Dane comes into Wimbledon without a title under her belt in 2016 and suffered a disappointing first round exit to French Open quarterfinalist Yulia Putintseva.

Poor results during the back-to-back Premier Mandatory events at the BNP Paribas Open and Miami Open were to follow for the Dane, losing to Zhang Shuai and Elina Svitolina respectively.

The loss to Svitolina in Miami was her last match before an ankle injury, which ruled her out of the clay court season entirely.

Wozniacki played in three grass court events on her return to the tour with mixed results, losing matches to Anett Kontaveit, Yanina Wickmayer and Monica Puig in Nottingham, Birmingham and Eastbourne but those were matches that the Dane would win if she was full of confidence.

Head-to-head

Wozniacki and Kuznetsova are no strangers to each other, as they have met 11 times on tour and, it is the Dane who has a slender 6-5 lead in their meetings.

The pair have met nine times on hard courts and twice on grass at Eastbourne. The Dane leads their head-to-head 2-0 on grass and Kuznetsova leads their head-to-head 5-4 on hard courts.

Their significant meetings have been at the 2008 BNP Paribas Open which Kuznetsova won in straight sets in 2008, and another victory for Kuznetsova was at the 2009 Miami Open in the quarterfinals.

They have met three times at Grand Slams, Wozniacki won their first meeting at the US Open in 2009 in the fourth round en route to reaching her maiden Grand Slam final, and two years later at the exact same stage, Wozniacki was triumphant.

However, Kuznetsova won their most recent meeting at a Grand Slam in the fourth round of the Australian Open in 2013, winning in three sets.

Match analysis

Kuznetsova does not have the weapons needed to do damage on grass like she does on a hard and clay court, and her serve doesn't work well on this surface but she has the endurance to last long in rallies.

Wozniacki is similar to the Russian on grass as her serve isn't strong on the grass and she can also endure in long rallies but and the former world number one will try to dictate the play.

The Dane needs to win this match badly as she reached the fourth round last year and she would suffer a tremendous fall down the rankings if shs loses tomorrow.

The Russian has proved that she can still beat the big names of women's tennis and tomorrow will be a challenge she will relish.

This match is scheduled last on Centre Court at around 5:30pm local time with plenty at stake.

Prediction:  Wozniacki in three
