Serena Williams has not won a Grand Slam singles title since her triumph at Wimbledon last year over Garbiñe Muguruza, which was followed by a shock  loss to Roberta Vinci in the semifinals of the US Open that thwarted her chances of completing the Calendar Year Grand Slam.

Losses to Angelique Kerber and Muguruza in the Australian Open and French Open finals this year means that Williams is still stuck on 21 Grand Slam singles titles as she tries to equal Steffi Graf's Open Era haul of 22.

The top seed won her first round match over Swiss qualifier Amra Sadikovic without little trouble and she spoke to the media following her victory.

Williams: A good start for me

The American was pleased with her start to the tournament, "It was a good start for me, I feel  like it was a solid start to go in the right direction."

Williams also spoke about her opponent Sadikovic's style of play, "She plays an old school grass court game, I knew that going in when you're prepared it's always a lot easier than not knowing,so once I knew that I was really ready for it."

The defending champion talks about the conditions

"No not at all, it was really windy out there but I think it's only on the court,  a ball effect and down at the bottom even though when you're out it doesn't seem that windy when you're on the court there's a ton of wind so that was all."

Talking about the Calendar Year Grand Slam

The world number one was disappointed not have completed the Calendar Year Grand Slam and she speaks about the difference of winning four in  a row.

"Well, it's different because I guess  winning all four in a year is having all four, but it's also similar because at some point to have all four on your name is a good feeling and is essentially the same thing as having all four in the same year.

Williams talks about never completing the Calendar Year Grand Slam," I've never done it before in a year and but it was a pretty big deal to win four in a row again for the second time, that was unexpected for me and really cool."

The defending champion also talks about her misfortunes in Melbourne and Paris, "I think more a less about winning Australia, winning the French Open it didn't happen, I think about winning Wimbledon."

She claims that 22 Slams are not on her mind, "I don't necessarily think about winning 22, mentally I've been further down than anyone can be well maybe not anyone, I've been pretty low and there's nothing that's mentally hard for me."

Pleased with intensity on court

"For a first round no, I feel like I was where I was needed to be, I needed to be pumped for the match, intense and show and feel a lot on the court and that was typically how I play and I needed to do that."

Williams resumes the defense of her Wimbledon title on Thursday against her compatriot Christina McHale.
