Fifth seed Simona Halep is a former Grand Slam finalist, having reached the final of the French Open in 2014, the Romanian followed that showing on the clay courts of Roland Garros and made the semifinals of Wimbledon, the following month.

Francesca Schiavone formerly ranked at number four in the world, is in the twilight of her career and the Italian's best run on the lawns of Wimbledon was a has made quarterfinals of Wimbledon back in 2009.

The Romanian is currently working with Darren Cahill and Halep is unsure whether to play at the Rio Olympics due to concerns of the zika virus.

Halep is one of five players along with Serena Williams, Garbine Muguruza, Angelique Kerber and Agnieszka Radwanska who have a shot of finishing this tournament as the world number one.

How they got here

The Romanian number one displayed good attacking and defensive tennis against Slovakia's Anna Karolina Schmeidlova who's having a torrid 2016 campaign.

Halep defeated Schmeidlova 6-4, 6-1 and she will be full of confidence going into her second round match with Schiavone.

Schiavone didn't play a warm-up event heading into the third Grand Slam tournament of the year but that didn't affect her as she found her feet on the grass straight away.

The Italian recorded a straight sets victory over Latvia's Anastasija Sevastova 7-6, 6-4.

  Their history

Halep and Schiavone have met each other once on the WTA tour and the veteran won their round of 16 encounter in Marrakech on the red dirt defeating Halep comprehensively 6-3, 6-2.

Their Wimbledon records

The former French Open finalist is competing in her sixth consecutive Wimbledon and the Romanian's results have been poor, other than that semifinal finish in 2014.

Halep has lost in the first round in 2012 and 2015 and in the second round on her main draw debut appearance in 2011 and 2013.

Schiavone's record at Wimbledon is diabolical as she has suffered losses in the first round, second round and third rounds on 13 occasions and has made it into the second week of Wimbledon twice.

The Italian made the quarterfinals in 2009 losing to then fourth-seeded Russian Elena Dementieva and in 2012, Schiavone lost in three sets to the defending champion Petra Kvitova in the fourth round.

Who wins?

Grass is historically Halep's weakest surface but she has won a title on grass before and she is one of the best movers on the women's tour and she is very good attacking on this surface.

The Romanian will struggle against big hitters but she will excel well in long rallies and she can put Schiavone in tough positions.

Grass is also Schiavone's weakest surface and the Italian has slowed down a bit she isn't as good as she used to be. The former Grand Slam winner won her first match at Wimbledon since 2012 following three consecutive first round losses in the last three editions.

Halep has plenty more to play for and she will need to have another good run here at Wimbledon and she is definitely a contender to lift the Venus Rosewater Dish in a fortnight.

This match is scheduled third on No.2 Court and the winner will play 26th seed Kiki Bertens or Mona Barthel in the third round.

Prediction: Halep to win in straight sets.
