Manchester United secured their place in the fourth round of the EFL Cup with a 3-1 win over Northampton Town, and will now face Manchester City in the next round.
It was an eventful first period, with Michael Carrick giving the away side the lead and Wayne Rooney having a goal chalked off, but a late penalty from Alex Revell saw the sides go in level.
United picked up a gear in the second period, with Ander Herrera clattering the post before firing United back into the lead, and Marcus Rashford rounded off the tie with the third.
United begin well
Jose Mourinho's side were in need of a good performance, having lost their last three matches, and they start brightly at Sixfields.
Rooney should have scored seven minutes in, when it was laid on a plate to him by Ashley Young, but somehow managed to put it wide from eight yards.
Carrick showed him how it was done ten minutes later as he gave United the lead. Carrick had proven impressive in his first appearance of season, and did brilliantly to curl Rooney's deflected indirect free-kick into the far corner.
It looked to be two when Rooney tapped home the second effort after Timothy Fosu-Mensah clattered the bar, but he was flagged for offside.
Northampton defying the odds
The home side already had a Premier League scalp to their names in West Brom and proved more and more dangerous as the half went on.
United's defence fell asleep as Kenji Gorre was free out wide, and his shot looked dangerous but a slight deflection saw it clatter the crossbar.
Northampton were handed their opportunity to get back in the game when they were rewarded a penalty three minutes from the break.
It was again poor defending, as United failed to clear their lines and Daley Blind's tackle on Sam Hoskins gave Stephen Atwell no option.
It was Revell who stepped up, and he made no mistake, sending Sergio Romero the wrong way and Sixfields into a frenzy.
United regain lead in impressive second half
United came flying out the traps in the second period and came mightily close to regaining their lead just after the whistle.
The ball was picked up by Herrera on the edge of the area, and looked to have got everything right but the shot came back off the post.
Mourinho was showing no mercy, bringing on both Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Rashford, and the youngster had a big hand in helping regain United's lead.
He picked up the ball just inside the area, before laying it off to Herrera who was running in, and the Spaniard hammered the ball into the bottom corner with the first-time effort.

After setting up the second, Rashford finished off the tie in strange circumstances with the third goal.
A long punt upfield looked easy for Adam Smith to clear, but his hesitation was Rashford's gain as he stole the ball to tap into an empty net.
