In the lunchtime kick-off, Aston Villa, despite a late scare, managed to hold on to take all three points at Villa Park.

Both sides came into this fixture on the back of opening day defeats, with Ex-England colleagues Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard meeting for the first time as managers.

Goals from Danny Ings and Emi Buendia gave Villa a two-goal advantage before an own goal from Lucas Digne against his former side gave Everton some late hope.

The victory will ease some of the pressure on Gerrard as Lampard and Everton are beginning to feel the heat.

Southampton came from behind to take a share of the spoils, at home, to Leeds.

Rodrigo scored a second-half brace to put Leeds ahead; The Leeds attackers first came from a deft flick at the near post after Jack Harrison fired in a cross. The second arrived after Pascal Struijk flicked on a corner for Rodrigo to nod in unmarked.

Joe Aribo came off the bench to reduce the deficit before Kyle Walker-Peters fired home to give the Saints their first point of the season.

The draw helped Southampton to end a run of results that had seen them lose their last five matches.

Arsenal made it back-to-back wins, winning 4-2 against Leicester City, with Gabriel Jesus giving a man-of-the-match display.

The Brazilian scored two and set up two in an attacking masterclass. The first was a sublime curling effort after he had cut inside from the left. 12 minutes later, he was on hand to head in at the back post after a luckless Jamie Vardy flicked on inadvertently from an Arsenal corner.

Leicester got back into the game when the otherwise solid William Saliba headed past Aaron Ramsdale. The reprieve was short-lived as Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward fumbled a cross for Jesus to tee up Granit Xaka for a simple tap-in to re-establish Arsenal’s two-goal lead. A James Maddison strike would help Leicester back into the game on 74 minutes, only for Gabriel Martinelli to score with a tidy finish outside the box to ensure the Gunners took all 3 points.

While things look very rosy at the Emirates, Leicester and Brendan Rodgers continue to struggle from set pieces. With a quiet transfer window so far, Rodgers will hope to see some new faces come to the King Power before the window shuts.

New signing Nick Pope was in inspired form for Newcastle as they held Brighton to a scoreless draw at the Amex.

Newcastle rode their luck for the majority of the game, with Pope making two excellent saves as well as having the ball cleared off the line twice. Pascal Gross could have won it for the Seagulls with five minutes remaining, but contrived to scuff the ball wide from close range.

Brighton’s struggles to score at home continued despite yet another positive display. With striker Neil Maupay expected to join Forest, signing a new striker will be of the utmost importance to Brighton Manager Graham Potter. Newcastle will take confidence from keeping two clean sheets in their opening two games.

  • Manchester City 4-0 Bournemouth

Newly-promoted Bournemouth endured a difficult trip to the Etihad, suffering a heavy defeat to champions Manchester City.

Goals from captain Ilkay Gundogan, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden and an own goal from Jefferson Lerma sent out a message to the rest of the Premier League. The one minor concern for Man City would be Erling Haaland’s ineffectual performance - the striker only registered eight touches during his 74 mins on the field.

Bournemouth struggled to live with the intensity and quality of City, making for a chastening afternoon in the scorching summer heat. Scott Parker will be happy with his side as they never dropped their heads and can take some positives into next week's game at home to Arsenal.

Wolves goalkeeper Jose Sa made up for his poor performance last week, redeeming himself by saving an Aleksander Mitrovic penalty to earn his side a point.

In a poor game, both sides struggled to fashion many clear-cut opportunities. Bobby De Cordova-Reid had Fulham’s best chance in the first half - but his header was saved by Sa. Wolves’ best opportunity fell to Morgan Gibbs White, but the midfielder somehow fire over inside the box from Rayan Aït-Nouri’s cross.

After scoring his penalty last week, Mitrovic will be disappointed to have missed his kick, denying Fulham a first Premier League win in 12 attempts.

In the tea-time kick-off, Brentford inflicted a humiliating defeat on Eric ten Hag’s Man Utd.  The Bee’s scored four goals in 35 minutes, adding to the latest chapter in United’s continual decline.

Josh Da Silva opened the scoring after his tame shot squirmed past David De Gea in the United goal. Brentford made it two when Mattias Jensen robbed Christian Eriksen inside his own box. Ben Mee and Brian Mbeumo added to the score line to condemn Man United to their seventh away defeat in a row.

Brentford were excellent in every department, showing United that having a chequebook, but no structure or club identity, is no longer enough in the present day. With Liverpool up next, things might get worse before they get better for the Red Devils.

Nottingham Forest, playing their first home match in the top flight in 23 years, secured their first Premier League victory since beating Leicester City 1-0 back in May 1999.

They rode their luck at times, with West Ham hitting the woodwork twice and having a goal chalked off in the first half. Dean Henderson out to prove a point after his loan move from Man Utd saved a penalty from Hammers captain Declan Rice on 65 mins.

The Forest fans were in a buoyant mood, creating a party atmosphere which reached fever pitch when Taiwo Awoniyi bundled the ball home on the stroke of halftime.  The home side held on for a historic victory, and West Ham will be frustrated that they didn’t manage to score for a second game in succession.

In what was a ferocious London derby, Harry Kane secured a point for Tottenham, scoring the equalizer 6 minutes into stoppage time.

Referee Anthony Taylor was under scrutiny throughout, Chelsea feeling aggrieved when he didn’t award Kai Havertz a free kick after a challenge by Rodrigo Bentancur and failed to punish Cristian Romero when the Spurs defender pulled Marc Cucurella’s hair.

The action was just as exciting on the sidelines as Thomas Tuchel and Antonio Conte clashed repeatedly during the game. This culminated in a heated exchange as the full-time whistle blew between the two managers, both refusing to let go after the post-game handshake leading to a melee. Referee Anthony Taylor sent both men off after the incident.

Kalidou Koulibaly had put Chelsea 1-0 up with an excellent volley from a Cucurella corner. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg equalised on 68 minutes for Spurs with a low, precise finish from outside the box. Conte celebrated exuberantly in front of the Chelsea bench. Reece James restored Chelsea’s lead when he ghosted in to finish off a flowing counterattack 13 minutes from time.

Just as Chelsea thought they would hold on for the win, Kane would glance in a header to take an undeserved point with only moments left. Chelsea, having been the better team, will be frustrated to have dropped two points.

Liverpool’s slow start to the season continued on Monday night when they could only draw with Crystal Palace.

Despite being the more dominant team for the majority of the contest, Liverpool struggled to break down the Palace resistance. Patrick Viera’s side looked dangerous on the counterattack against a Liverpool side struggling with injuries.

Against the run of play, Wilfried Zaha opened the scoring with a cool finish in front of the Kop. Things were to get worse for Liverpool in the second half, with Darwin Nunez reacting to a shove from Palace defender Joachim Andersen as the Uruguayan was sent off for a headbutt on his first full start.

Luis Diaz would come to Klopp’s rescue, scoring a sublime sole goal, curling the ball beyond Vicente Guaita to level the game. Liverpool, despite being a man down, did all they could to win the match - but for the second week in a row, they came up short.

Liverpool’s next game is away to Manchester United on Monday night. Having already dropped four points this season, the side looks threadbare with a growing injury list, and now Nunez is set to miss three games with a suspension.

Klopp will hope his fortunes improve soon.
