Fulham have picked up their first victory since returning to the Premier League with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Brentford at Craven Cottage.

Playing for the first time since their memorable Championship play-off final in the spring of 2020, the Cottagers were in front almost instantly through Bobby Decordova-Reid.

The hosts doubled their advantage as Joao Palhinha scored for the first time since signing with the club on July 4th with a powerful header.

Christian Norgaard halved the deficit a minute from halftime from a corner kick after the Bees defender was lucky not to have been sent off.

Ivan Toney, saw two goals ruled out for offsides, but did level in the 71st minute, but Aleksandar Mitrovic had the final word, winning it for the Cottagers with a guided header.

Fulham are up to fourth in the table following the victory while defeat sees Brentford drop to fifth, one place behind their London neighbors.

Story of the match

Marco Silva made two changes to the Cottagers side that drew with Wolverhampton Wanderers last week, Bernd Leno replacing Marek Rodak in goal and a first start for Jay Stansfield.

Brentford boss Thomas Frank returned to a 4-3-3 formation with Yoane Wissa coming into the starting XI in place of Mads Roerslev.

Just 42 seconds into the match, the hosts were in front as Mitrovic shot, which was deflected and he crossed for Stansfield, whose shot was tipped onto the crossbar and out to Decordova-Reid, who finished.

David Raya was called into action, comfortably saving from Andreas Pereira before Stansfield shot straight at the Brentford goalkeeper while on the break.

Mitrovic had Fulham's second ruled out through a check of VAR, but with 20 minutes gone, the hosts did grab a second. Pereira swung in a corner that was headed home by Palhinha.

Brentford clawed their way back into the match with just a minute remaining in the first half as Norgaard's volley unmarked from a corner left Leno with no chance.

Five minutes into the second half, Toney thought he had pulled the Bees level, but the goal was ruled out for offsides through VAR.

Pereira won a free-kick in a dangerous position and he took it himself, lifting it over the wall, forcing Raya to tip it over.

After a Brentford turnover, Mitrovic was handed a golden opportunity to double the lead, but Raya did well to push the shot away and keep the visitors within striking distance.

Five minutes after that, Wissa sent the ball across the face of goal that Toney met to slot past Leno and bring the Bees level.

Tom Cairney and Kevin Mbabu were introduced and it was the latter whose inch-perfect cross saw Mitrovic denied by a spectacular save from the excellent Raya.

At the death, Mbabu started the passage of play that decided this enthralling contest, his ball met by Mitrovic, who made no mistake and finished past Raya to cap off a first-ever top-flight meeting between the two London rivals.

He's the engine of the team and at the heart of all of Fulham's attacking play. Dangerous throughout, he was given many chances to convert with excellent build-up play and expertly took the chance that decided matters.
