Nottingham Forest let a late lead slip as the Reds had to settle for a 1-1 draw with Everton at Goodison Park.

Seeking their first away win in the Premier League for 23 years, Forest went in front through Brennan Johnson in the 81st minute.

Everton hit back with two minutes remaining as Demarai Gray brought down a long pass from Jordan Pickford to slot home and give the Toffees their first point of the season.

The Reds have picked up four points from their opening three top-flight fixtures and face league leaders Tottenham Hotspur at the City Ground next Sunday.

Story of the match

Forest manager Steve Cooper made one change to the sid that beat West Ham United last weekend as Steve Cook replaced the injured Moussa Diakhate in the centre of defense.

New signings Morgan Gibbs-White, Emmanuel Dennis, Remo Freuler and Cheikhou Kouyate were named among the substitutes, along with the returning Ryan Yates.

Three minutes into the contest, Gray sent in an inviting free-kick into the penalty area that a lunging Tom Davies couldn't quite connect with.

Davies would have a go on ten minutes as his low drive whistled just past Henderson's far post and the Forest goalkeeper denied Gray and Anthony Gordon with a pair of fine saves.

Pickford was then called into action to save from Neco Williams after some good work by Orel Mangala. Lewis O'Brien snatched at the rebound, going over the crossbar.

Johnson then found last week's goal-scoring hero Taiwo Awoinyi after the Reds pressed high up the pitch, but Pickford was on hand to again deny the visitors.

On 32 minutes, Awoniyi stole the ball and fed Mangala, but the excellent Pickford was again equal to the challenge.

Shortly before halftime, Gray got past two defenders and sent a lovely through ball into the path of Gordon, but Henderson came off his line to beat the Everton number ten to the ball.

The hosts were on the front foot to start the second half, Salomon Rondon turning on the edge of the area to send a low shot just wide of the post.

Forest were forced into a change in the 55th minute with Mangala picking up an injury and Yates coming on for his Premier League debut after battling his own injury issues.

Everton boss Frank Lampard then introduced Amadou Onana for his first match at home with the club as Dwight McNeil also came on.

Awoniyi was subbed off for club-record signing Gibbs-White, who arrived from Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday morning.

Henderson came to the Reds rescue to deny Mason Holgate's close-range header following some more outstanding work by Gray.

Onana was next to receive service from Gray as he took a lay-off 30 yards from goal, but he shot over the bar.

With quarter of an hour to play, the Toffees were looking the likelier to grab the game's next goal and Gordon saw his effort from the edge of the area denied by the busy Henderson, who turned it behind for a corner.

Gibbs-White made his first impact in a Forest shirt as he beat two defenders, his cross falling for Williams, who went wide after Yates saw his chance deflect wide.

With nine minutes to go, the visitors opened the scoring. Pickford parried Yates's shot, but Johnson was quickest to react, finishing into the bottom corner.

Kouyate came on for his Forest debut on 85 minutes, replacing Jesse Lingard.

Dramatically, the hosts leveled. A long ball by Pickford was met in stride by Gray, whose composed finish beat Henderson with just two minutes to go.
