Goals from Danny Ings and Emi Buendia were enough to cancel out Lucas Digne's own goal to give Aston Villa a 2-1 win against Everton.

The hosts were in control of the game and deserved to win, but were under pressure during a manic final few minutes of the tie.

Here are the player ratings from the match:

Aston Villa

Emi Martinez- 6

It was a largely uneventful game for the Argentine in goal, who did not have a save to make in the first half.

The final five minutes plus added time were slightly different, as the goalkeeper was forced into action a few times, and there was very little he could have done about the own goal.

Matty Cash- 7

The Polish wing back had a solid game in Saturday's early kick off.

He made some good runs down the wing to provide an option in attack, whilst also sweeping up some dangerous attacks from the visitors.

Diego Carlos- 6

The Brazilian had a good chance to open the scoring in the early stages of the tie, getting a free header he had all wrong to fire over the bar.

He defended well across the game and was taken off in added time.

Tyrone Mings- 5

There had been lots of talk about the former captain ahead of the game after he was dropped by Steven Gerrard for Villa's last game against Bournemouth.

The centre back arguably did not answer his critics, as he seemed shaky in defence at times, relying on Boubacar Kamara to get hm out of jail after his missed header from Alex Iwobi's cross nearly led to an equaliser before half time.

He did make a fantastic tackle in added time to deny Amadou Onana however, perhaps the moment he needed to get his confidence back.

Lucas Digne- 5

The Frenchman was on course to have a solid game against his former club until he scored an own goal late on.

Digne provided space out wide for Villa and did the job he needed to do in defence as well for the majority of the game.

The own goal was unfortunate, as he tried to turn the ball past the post but it was a good cross that turned him around and gave him little chance of success.

John McGinn (c)- 6

The captain had a few good shots on goal, but was not one of the main players to contribute to the win on the day.

Boubacar Kamara- 6

The holding midfielder made some important challenges to help out Mings at times, and generally had a solid game for Villa.

Jacob Ramsey-7

Ramsey played an important part in the win, making good runs down the wing and playing good balls into the box.

It will have pleased Gerrard to see the young Englishman make the contribution to the win that he did.

Philippe Coutinho- 5

The former Liverpool man had a great chance to double Villa's lead with the final action of the first half, when Ramsey's cross was just too fast for the midfielder who would have had a tap in.

He was largely quiet in the game before being taken off around the hour mark.

Ollie Watkins- 7

The Englishman got the assist for both goals, first putting the ball in a dangerous area which Ings managed to get himself on the end of to turn and score.

He also laid the ball off to Buendia for him to double the lead late on.

Danny Ings- 8

The striker opened his account for the season to make it 1-0.

Ings received the ball from Watkins, turned his man and fired the ball beyond Pickford, showing the quality he possesses in front of goal.

He was replaced by Leon Bailey in the 78th minute.

Substitutes

Emiliano Buendia- 8

The substitute seemed to have a bigger impact than Coutinho in the attacking midfield, putting himself in the right places and linking up the front line.

He acrobatically tried to beat Pickford and succeeded, but Vitaliy Mykolenko cleared off the line.

He went on to score off the bench, creating the chance and duly finishing it off in the 86th minute.

Leon Bailey- 6

Bailey was not on the pitch for long, but he made some driving runs at the Everton defence and looked threatening whilst he was on the pitch.

Callum Chambers- 6

Chambers made a fantastic tackle late on to deny Onana, but was only on the pitch for a couple of minutes.

Ashley Young- N/A

Young was brought on with a couple of minutes to play and did not contribute to the game.

Everton

Jordan Pickford- 5

Admittedly there was not much that Pickford could do about the goals, but Pickford was still beaten twice on the day.

Nathan Patterson- 6

There were promising moments for Patterson, who made some good runs and managed to win a foul on the edge of the box which came to nothing.

Mason Holgate- 6

Holgate made some important tackles to sweep up the danger at times, but was also part of a defence that failed to keep Villa out.

James Tarkowski- 5

The former Burnley skipper did not have his best game.

He did not manage to make any tackles of note and was on the losing side as well.

Conor Coady- 6

Coady's debut was not the one he would have wanted, but his performance was not terrible.

He dealt with the danger that came his way, making a few good blocks, before being replaced by Dele Alli in a more attacking change late on.

Vitaliy Mykolenko- 6

The Ukrainian made a goal-line clearance to deny Buendia before he got his goal later on, but did not have much of an impact other than that.

Abdoulaye Doucoure- 5

The midfielder limped off after just 33 minutes in the game, which will be concerning for Frank Lampard and his side.

The 29 year old did not have much of an impact on the game whilst he was playing either, as Villa had the vast majority of the ball in the opening stages, scoring just before the Mali international was replaced.

Alex Iwobi- 4

Iwobi was quiet throughout the match and did not create enough chances for the strikers.

Demarai Gray- 5

Gray managed to cut in from the flanks a few times to shoot, forcing Martinez to make his first save of the game.

Ultimately however, he did not do enough to set up his team mates or score himself, so it was a disappointing afternoon for the winger.

He was replaced by debutant Amadou Onana late on.

Anthony Gordon- 5

He had a spell late on where he looked very threatening, but Gordon did not do enough to lead the line on the day.

Dwight McNeil- 4

The new signing found himself in the right place at the right time on a couple of occasions, but often made the wrong choice in terms of what he did with the ball.

His pass to Gray was far too strong early on which could have played the former Leicester City man in on goal.

He also chose to flick the ball on instead of shooting from close range from a cross just after the restart.

He was replaced by Salomon Rondon in the 64th minute.

Substitutes

Tom Davies- 5

Davies was quite heavily involved from the off when he came on as a first half substitute, but he squandered his chance to score just before the break.

Salomon Rondon- 4

He was not on for long, but he had a great chance to equalise before Mings intercepted.

Amadou Onana- 7

He came on for his debut in the last ten minutes but was able to make the contribution to force the goal.

He will be a positive for Everton on what was otherwise a disappointing day for them.

Dele Alli- N/A

The former Tottenham Hotspur player was not on the pitch for long enough to make an impact.
