Nottingham Forest have won their first Premier League match in 23 years as the Reds defeated West Ham United 1-0 at the City Ground in the 200th top-flight game in club history.

Taiwo Awoniyi struck towards the end of the first half after an attempted clearance by Hammers defender Ben Johnson clipped the striker and rolled in.

The visitors saw a goal by Said Benrahma ruled out by VAR and he and Pablo Fornals hit the underside of the crossbar.

Brennan Johnson had Forest's second ruled out for offside and goalkeeper Dean Henderson saved a penalty from Declan Rice to ensure all three points stayed with the hosts.

The Reds move up to 10th in the table and next visit Everton in six days' time while West Ham sits second from bottom as they prepare to welcome Brighton & Hove Albion to London next Sunday.

Story of the match

Forest boss Steve Cooper handed starts to two of his new signings, Orel Mangala and Jesse Lingard as they replaced Jack Colback and Sam Surridge, who was among the substitutes.

West Ham manager David Moyes made just one change to the side that was defeated by Manchester City last weekend as Benrahma came in for Manuel Lanzini and Maxwel Cornet, signed from Burnley, was named to the bench.

On a brilliant, sunny afternoon in Nottingham, the Reds started with intent, sending in numerous crosses with Awoniyi going close early on with a header.

Michail Antonio then won a free-kick in the sixth minute that Aaron Cresswell took, but he could only shoot wide.

Lukas Fabianski was called into action to deny the Reds on a couple of half-chances before Awoniyi met a Neco Williams cross that he headed just wide from a deep position.

At the other end, Benrahma tested Henderson with a curling effort that the Forest shot-stopper was able to parry. The ensuing corner resulted in a header by Tomas Soucek that Harry Toffolo was forced to clear off the line.

Williams then had a go from close range, only a brilliant save by Fabianski keeping the off the scoresheet and Benrahma then beat Henderson one-on-one, but VAR showed Antonio had committed a foul on Mangala in the build-up play.

Two minutes into first-half stoppage time, the hosts were in front. Toffolo cut the ball back for Jesse Lingard, who sent a first-time shot on goal with little on it, but Johnson could only lunge at the clearance that an unchallenged Awoniyi pounced on to score.

Just 25 seconds into the second half, Fornals struck a superb shot from distance, but it clattered off of the woodwork. Henderson then did brilliantly to keep out Soucek's header on the rebound.

On 54 minutes, Forest appeared to double their lead when Johnson dinked past Fabianski, but referee Robert Jones immediately ruled out for offside.

Benrahma came close to leveling on the hour mark from a free-kick, but much like Fornals in the first half, his strike found the underside of the crossbar and was claimed by Henderson.

Moments later, the visitors won a penalty when Soucek's shot was judged to have hit the arm of Reds defender Scott McKenna. Rice stepped up to the spot, but Henderson dived low to preserve the Forest lead.

Williams was on hand to make a late vital clearance from Kurt Zouma’s  header late on.

West Ham boss David Moyes made a triple substitution, sending on Gianluca Scamacca, Lanzini, and Cornet, but it made little difference on a day Forest fans and players will never forget.

Player of the match: Dean Henderson

Of all of the now 16 new faces to come to the City Ground, with Emmanuel Dennis confirmed and Neal Maupay on the way, it is Henderson who may prove to be most crucial.

He did superbly to save Rice's penalty and reacted extremely well to push away Soucek's header. Combined with his handling of the ball and kicking and he's the perfect player to have between the posts.
