Goals from Danny Ings and Emiliano Buendia were enough to cancel out Lucas Digne's own goal as Aston Villa beat Everton 2-1.

Here are the main takeaways from the game:

Aston Villa can perform under Gerrard

After a dismal display at the Vitality Stadium on the opening day of the season last weekend which saw Villa lose 2-0 against Bournemouth, there had been criticism levelled at Villains boss Steven Gerrard

Gerrard decided to play Tyrone Mings following the big decision to drop him for the last game, and whilst his performance was not flawless, his tackle at the end of the game may have secured the win for Villa, showing Gerrard can manage players effectively.

It was a far more complete showing from The Villains overall, who looked like a far better side than they showed in their last game, dominating possession in the first half especially.

The hosts made good use of the wide areas also, which Everton struggled to deal with at times.

The performance will have given Villa fans hope that Gerrard can lead the club to a successful season after a disappointing end to the last campaign and a start to the new one which did not impress either.

The only concern for Gerrard will be that his side continued to struggle to defend set pieces, as many corners ended up as goalmouth scrambles which the hosts struggled to defend.

The Villains have good squad depth going forwards

In the second half, Gerrard opted to replace Danny Ings late on and Philippe Coutinho came off with an injury as well, which he will hope is not serious.

Despite removing two key players from the squad, Gerrard was able to call on Leon Bailey and Buendia, the latter was able to score the second goal for Villa.

Both showed their quality in short spells on the pitch, which, when you add Jacob Ramsey and Ollie Watkins' threat going forwards into the equation, creates a promising attacking threat for The Villains for the season ahead.

Gerrard will have to find a way to balance the playing time for all of them, but will be pleased with the performance from his attackers on the day.

Injuries have taken their toll on The Toffees

Abdoulaye Doucoure limped off with an injury in the 35th minute of the game soon after the visitors went 1-0 down, adding to an extensive injury list for Everton.

Toffees boss Frank Lampard has had to deal with several first team injuries, such as key players Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Ben Godfrey

It seems like the injuries have taken the balance out of the Everton squad, who struggled to create any chances until they went for the game late on when debutant Amadou Onana was introduced.

The impact that he had on the game such as forcing the own goal will be a positive, however with the absentees piling up for Lampard, he will be concerned with the amount of first team players missing and the impact it is having on his squad.

Everton look to be under threat of relegation again

It is possibly quite early to tell whether Everton will be at risk of relegation after just two games, but the early signs are not promising.

A 1-0 loss against Chelsea to start the season is nothing to be ashamed of, but with the loss of key player Richarlison to Tottenham and a defeat to Villa who have struggled of late, there will be concerns amongst the Everton faithful.

Villa had not won in their last five league outings, spanning the last season and the start of this campaign winning only two of their last 12, with wins against sides who have since been relegated.

The loss to such an out of sorts team will hurt Lampard and his squad, but they will need to bounce back quickly if they want to avoid being left in the same predicament as they were last term.
