The US Men's National Team kicks off the Round of 16 as the Stars and Stripes face the Netherlands.

Having started group stage play with a pair of draws against Wales and England, USA defeated Iran 1-0 on a goal by Christian Pulisic to seal their place in the knockout stages as runner-up in Group B.

Gregg Berhalter's side have not allowed a goal from open play in Qatar and their run of not giving up a goal stands at 187 minutes.

Netherlands, back in the World Cup for the first time since 2014, finished top of Group A, with 2-0 victories over Senegal and hosts Qatar coming either side of a 1-1 draw against Ecuador, seeing them reach the knockout stages for an 11th straight time.

Louis Van Gaal has overseen an 18-game unbeaten run since being eliminated at the 2020 European Championships and the 71-year-old could move joint second all-time with an 11th World Cup game without defeat.

This is the sixth time the Netherlands and USA have faced each other with the Oranje holding a 4-1 edge, but the Stars and Stripes came from 3-1 down to post a 4-3 victory in a 2015 friendly in Amsterdam, Bobby Wood scoring a 90th-minute winner.

Netherlands

A severe flu bug has swept through the Oranje with the severe air conditioning to blame and while Louis Van Gaal has not revealed which players have come down with symptoms, one of them is rumored to be Frenkie de Jong.

Defender Jimmie Frimpong suffered an ankle scare on Wednesday, but returned to full training on Thursday. Denzel Dumfries will once again line up on the right side of the back-line.

Nathan Ake and Matthijs de Ligt are on yellow cards and will miss a possible quarterfinal match should they be booked here.

USA

The biggest news surrounds Pulisic, who suffered a pelvic contusion after cashing into Iran goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, but US team doctors have cleared him to play and it's certain he will start.

Josh Sargent, who has started two of three games in Qatar, is suffering from ankle soreness with manager Gregg Berhalter doubtful about his participation.

Sergino Dest, Weston McKennie, Tim Ream, Kellyn Acosta, and captain Tyler Adams are all on yellow cards, and should any of them be shown a caution, they would miss the potential quarterfinal match.

  • Likely line-ups

Netherlands: Noppert; Aké, van Dijk, Timber; Blind, de Jong, de Roon, Dumfries; Klaassen; Gakpo, Depay

USA: Turner; Robinson, Ream, Carter-Vickers, Dest; McKennie, Adams, Musah; Aaronson, Pulisic, Weah

  • Key players

Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

He's scored in all of the three group-stage matches and has opened the scoring on each occasion. A goal would see him become the first Dutch player to score in four successive World Cup matches.

The PSV Eindhoven star is equally dangerous on the wing as he is playing as a striker and has even shown the ability to play as an attacking midfielder.

He's versatile enough to help the team in ball possession and has the ability to find space between the opposition left-back and central defenders.

Christian Pulisic (USA)

He showed his commitment to the cause by sacrificing his body to score one of the biggest goals in US soccer history against Iran. His performance at the World Cup prior to that was nothing short of sensational.

By stepping onto the pitch, he makes the USA attack more formidable and is expected to receive plenty of service from the dynamic midfield trio of Adams, McKennis and Yunus Musah.

His creativity on the ball, energy, pressing style that fits Berhalter's system and ability to lead by example make him the player the Dutch must stop in order to be successful.
