Arsenal returned to the summit of the Premier League after overcoming Liverpool 3-2 at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday.

Jurgen Klopp's side came from behind twice thanks to goals from Darwin Núñez and Roberto Firmino, but an early Gabriel Martinelli strike and a Bukayo Saka brace saw Arsenal take all three points.

Both sides face tough tests in their next Premier League fixtures, with Liverpool hosting champions Manchester City, and Mikel Arteta's men travelling up north to face Leeds United.

  • Story of the match

Arsenal were quickest off the mark and had the ball in the back of the net after 58 seconds. Winning the ball back inside their own half, the Gunners progressed quickly up the pitch, with captain Martin Odegaard slipping Martinelli through on goal with a perfectly weighted pass, which the Brazilian took in his stride and buried in the far corner.

Liverpool grew into the game, dominating possession for the first 30 minutes, and they came close to an equaliser when Núñez ran onto a Mohamed Salah pass, with the Uruguayan forcing Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale to make a good save.

The Englishman was forced into action again minutes later when he had to make a reflex save from William Saliba, who did well to intercept a Liverpool cross destined for the boot of Luis Diaz.

Liverpool's dominance soon prevailed and the Reds equalised in the 33rd minute. A great ball over the Arsenal defence by Trent Alexander Arnold was picked up by Diaz, who put a low cross into the box which Núñez was able to coolly convert with a sliding finish.

Just like they had scored within the first minute of the first half, Arsenal retook the lead in the last. Winning the ball back deep in their own half, the Gunners counterattacked quickly, with goalscorer Martinelli putting a low cross into the box, which was converted by Saka who slid the ball in at the back post.

Arsenal came out for the second half quickest again, with the Gunners dominating play. Odegaard came close just five minutes into the half, firing his shot straight at Alisson Becker from the edge of the box, after some excellent play in the buildup by Martinelli.

It didn't take long for Liverpool to get back into the game though, with the Reds picking Arsenal apart in midfield, before slipping subsititue Firmino through on goal who fired his side level with a brilliant finish into the far corner seven minutes into the second half.

Both sides were pressing for a third, but it was Arsenal who took the lead once again. The ball was like a pinball inside the Liverpool box, before a stray leg from Thiago Alcantara fouled Gabriel Jesus with the referee pointing to the penalty spot. Hale End graduate Saka stepped up and drilled the ball in the bottom corner, scoring his second goal of the match.

Despite seven added minutes and plenty of Liverpool pressure, Arsenal held their nerve in what could be a massive three points at the end of the season.

The result means Arsenal go back to the top of the table, one point ahead of Manchester City.

The Gunners will now look ahead to their midweek trip to Norway where they face Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League. Liverpool's next fixture is also in Europe, where they face Rangers on Wednesday at the Ibrox in the Champions League
