Manchester United travel to Brentford this weekend with the target of redemption after the embarrassment in the opening round of fixtures.

After a strong pre-season, Erik ten Hag's side was humbled with a 2-1 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday in the Dutchman's first competitive game in charge.

Despite Alexis Mac Allister's second-half own goal, Pascal Groß' brace was enough to secure the Seagulls' first-ever win at Old Trafford, condemning further embarrassment on the Red Devils.

Brentford also had a slow start to the new campaign after going 2-0 down within 46 minutes against Leicester City - but Thomas Frank's utilisation of the new five substitutes rule helped the Bees make a second-half comeback to earn a point, thanks to Josh Dasilva's maiden Premier League goal and Ivan Toney's left-footed strike.

This weekend's hosts have failed to beat United in their last seven meetings, dating back to 1938, losing six and drawing one of them. Their last win came in February 1938 - a 2-1 FA Cup triumph at Griffin Park.

Most recently, United did the double over Brentford, winning 3-1 on a very cold night in west London before winning comfortably 3-0 at Old Trafford in May.

Team News

Thomas Frank has no new injuries to contend with and will have the same squad at his disposal as he did against Leicester, plus the addition of another compatriot: Mikkel Damsgaard.

The 22-year-old arrived from Sampdoria earlier in the week and was announced on Wednesday after signing a five-year contract. It is very unlikely he will start on Saturday, but there is a possibility he will feature on the bench.

Kristoffer Ajer (hamstring), Ethan Pinnock (knee) and Sergi Canós (hamstring) remain absentees and continue their recovery.

Josh Dasilva could make his way into Brentford's starting line-up to replace Mathias Jensen after his match-saving cameo last weekend.

Anthony Martial missed out on last weekend's defeat due to a hamstring injury, and it remains to be seen if he will return to action in west London.

Ten Hag trialled Christian Eriksen as a false nine in the forward's absence, but that was unsuccessful, so it could see the Dutch coach resort to Cristiano Ronaldo up front, who scored a penalty against the Bees in May.

United will also be without Facundo Pellestri (ankle) and Brandon Williams

Likely line-ups

Brentford

Raya; Hickey, Jansson, Mee, Henry; Dasilva, Nørgaard, Janelt; Mbeumo, Toney, Wissa.

Manchester United

De Gea; Dalot, Maguire, Martinez, Shaw; Eriksen, Fred, Fernandes; Sancho, Ronaldo, Rashford.

Key players

Brentford: Christian Nørgaard

No player made more tackles (109) in the Premier League last season than the Dane, and only four made more tackles than his 64.

The 28-year-old is Brentford's most important player, and his absence in pre-season was duly notable as the side struggled to build through the thirds and conceded several avoidable goals.

He is a commanding presence in midfield and possesses great composure on the ball; he will be key for Brentford in maintaining possession and building momentum.

Alongside Vitaly Janelt and either Jensen or Dasilva, he will have an important role in contending with the creativity of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen and Jadon Sancho

Manchester United:  Christian Eriksen

A Brentford versus United preview would not be the same without the mention of Eriksen.

Frank and his squad are well aware of the qualities the 30-year-old possesses following a six-month stint at the formerly known Brentford Community Stadium, where he got a goal and four assists in 11 appearances, including key assists in wins against Burnley and Watford.

Now in the opposite changing room, Eriksen will pose a huge threat to Brentford's defence and will be targeting the defensive fragilities from crosses and set-pieces that have reappeared this summer.
