The summer of 2020 has been nothing short of exciting for Chelsea fans.

The imminent arrivals of Kai Havertz, Ben Chilwell and Thiago Silva are proving that Chelsea mean business.

Even before the summer began, the club’s hierarchy were able to secure the signings of Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner.

If last season wasn’t intriguing enough, then the upcoming campaign could prove to be even better for Blues fans.

As Chelsea’s summer business continues, VAVEL looks back at some of the club’s best summer transfer windows in recent years.

  • 2004/05

Chelsea had just finished second in the league behind the ArsenalInvincibles’, as well as reaching the Champions League semi-finals.

Claudio Ranieri was sacked and along came Jose Mourinho.

This transfer window would prove to be incredibly successful with the arrival of some big names.

Didier Drogba made the move to West London from Marseille and became one of the club’s greatest ever players.

Goalkeeper Petr Cech joined from Stade Rennais, and went on to earn the most clean sheets in Premier League history with Chelsea.

As well as these two, the Blues secured the signatures of Ricardo Carvalho, Paulo Ferreira and Arjen Robben.

The recruitment proved successful, as Chelsea went on to win the Premier League and the League Cup that season.

  • 2012/13

After Chelsea had secured their first ever Champions League title, it was time for them to make some improvements to the squad after a sixth-place finish in the league.

The big money signing was Eden Hazard, who arrived from Lille for around £32m.

Hazard was soon a fan favourite and became a Chelsea legend after seven successful years at the club.

The 21-year-old was also joined by Oscar, who was a crucial member of the first team squad during his time at the Blues.

Chelsea also completed the signing of Cesar Azpilicueta for a small fee of around £8m.

Since his arrival, he has become one of the club’s most consistent performers and is now the captain of the Blues.

  • 2014/15

Mourinho had made his big return to the Blues the summer before and helped guide Chelsea to third in the league and another Champions League semi-final.

The Blues were quick to finalise deals to improve the squad.

They secured the services of Diego Costa from Atlético Madrid and Cesc Fabregas from Barcelona, with the two forming a fantastic partnership on the pitch.

Filipe Luís also made the move to Chelsea, as well as QPR’s Loïc Rémy.

Even Drogba returned to Stamford Bridge for a second stint at the club as he joined from Galatasaray on a free transfer.

The Blues went on to win the Premier League and the League Cup in what would be Mourinho’s last full season at the club.

So far this year Chelsea’s transfer business has been brilliant, and it may not be over just yet.

It is clear to see that Frank Lampard and his ambitious Blues are building a strong team for years to come.

We will just have to wait and see if they can bring more silverware to SW6.
