England batsman Jonathan Trott has retired from international cricket.

The 34-year-old returned to the Test side for the tour of the West Indies, 18 months after leaving the Ashes tour with a stress-related illness, but managed only 72 runs in six innings.

Trott opened the batting during this series but really struggled to show any signs of promise. In those six innings, he had three scores of 0.

Talking about his decision, the 34-year-old said: "I was honoured to come back and play international cricket again and I'm disappointed it didn't work out.

"I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has helped me and given me the chance to represent England and to thank supporters for all their backing over the years," added Warwickshire's Trott.

"I also want to wish the lads all the very best for what will be an incredibly exciting summer.

"I've had incredible highs and some real lows in an England shirt but wouldn't change a thing. I look forward to continuing my career at Warwickshire and hopefully helping us win more silverware."

In total, the right-hander scored 3,835 runs in 52 Tests, including a century on his debut in the 2009 Ashes decider.

With the series against New Zealand coming up, England will have to select an opening batting partner for captain Alistair Cook. Yorkshire's Adam Lyth is the likely candidate. Lyth travelled with the squad to the Caribbean but didn't feature in any of the three test matches.
