Adam Lyth will make his Test debut in the first Test against New Zealand at Lords as he replaces recently retired Jonathan Trott as Alastair Cook's opening partner.

Mark Wood has also been named in the 12-man squad to face the Blackcaps. Liam Plunkett misses out after missing Yorkshire's recent LVCC County Championship game due to a breach of discipline.

Lyth, 27, scored close to 1,500 championship runs as Yorkshire won the title and will become England's 666 Test player. The ECB have offered Lyth the chance to skip the number associated with the devil, however, Lyth isn't worried by the superstitious number.

"Any Test number, I'm not bothered," he said.

"A Test debut at Lord's, walking through the Long Room with Alastair Cook to open the batting for England - it doesn't get much better than that, does it?"

National selector James Whitaker believes Lyth "fully deserves his chance."

"He [Lyth] has waited patiently for an opportunity with England having performed consistently for Yorkshire and England Lions in the last year."
