Michal Kwiatkowski (OPQS) won Stage 4 of the Tour of Britain to take the overall lead from Edoardo Zardini (Bardiani-CSF).

Kwiatkowski came out on top on the day's stage into Bristol, which featured a steep climb to the finish.

A nine-man breakaway went clear early in the stage and featured one of the home favourites, Alex Dowsett (Movistar).

However, the Commonwealth time trial champion suffered a double puncture which ruined his chances of victory, and later took to Twitter to voice his frustration at a rule which meant his team car was unable to provide assistance.

It looked increasingly likely that the break would stay away for the entire stage, and with just over eight kilometres remaining, three riders attempted to make absolutely sure.

Peter Velits (BMC), Albert Timmer (Giant-Shimano), and Lasse Norman Hansen (Garmin-Sharp) left their fellow escapees behind.

Inside the final two kilometres, Timmer attacked and opened up a small gap, while Jack Bauer (Garmin-Sharp) and Nicolas Roche (Tinkoff-Saxo) bridged across from the main field, hoping to make up for the disappointment of narrowly missing out on Stage 3.

Bauer caught Timmer and the duo sparred for a few hundred metres before the Dutchman opened up the sprint.

However, Kwiatkowski, who had sneaked up almost unnoticed with a small group, came from behind to take the win and the yellow jersey.

Timmer held on to take second place.

The race continues with Thursday's stage from Exmouth to Exeter.
