Steele Von Hoff (UniSA) won Stage 4 of the Tour Down Under after the day's racing came down to a bunch sprint in Mount Barker.

Daryl Impey (Orica-GreenEdge) and Wouter Wippert (Drapac) crossed the line second and third respectively.

Rohan Dennis (BMC) continues to lead the general classification ahead of teammate Cadel Evans and Giant-Alpecin's Tom Dumoulin.

Although the start of the race saw a number of attacks, none could stick until 23 kilometres into the stage, when a quartet of riders - Michael Hepburn (Orica-GreenEdge) Peter Kennaugh (Sky), Cedric Pineau (FDJ) and former race leader Jack Bobridge (UniSA).

Bobridge claimed the KOM points at Sellicks Hill to ensure that he held onto the polka-dot jersey for another day before allowing himself to slip safely back into the bunch. His three breakaway companions were caught just before the day's intermediate sprint, which Daryl Impey won to take the three-second time bonus.

Shortly afterwards another breakaway, consisting of Ruslan Tleubayev (Astana), Maxim Belkov (Katusha) and Pieter Serry (Etixx-QuickStep), formed and the trio built up an advantage of more than two minutes at one stage.

However, the peloton increased the tempo and one by one the three riders were reeled back in, with everything coming together with nine kilometres to go.

Lars Boom (Astana) attempted to set up teammate Luis Leon Sanchez with a late attack which had the peloton panicking. Sanchez was joined by Gorka Izagirre Insausti (Movistar) but the Spaniards failed to make their attack stick and they too returned to the main field.

With 300 metres to go, a touch of wheels as the bunch wound up for the sprint led to a huge pile-up.

However, Von Hoff escaped the carnage and proved too fast for Impey and Wippert to claim the first WorldTour win of his career.

"Jack Bobridge was looking after me saying, 'be patient, be patient. I know these roads like the back of my hand'," von Hoff said.

"I just trusted it then he delivered me in the final km under the banner and then I just sniveled and held the wheel of the trains.

"He told me to get on Quicksteps' because with [Mark] Renshaw here there was definitely a fantastic chance and I did that and it opened up on the left hand side of the road.

"I think we're batting well above our average here: two stage wins, the ochre jersey for two days now," von Hoff said of the UniSA team.

"This is fantastic, we've got such a good team here and good staff as well."

Saturday's penultimate stage will take the riders from McLaren Vale to the famous Willunga Hill.
