Kleber Da Silva (Funvic) powered his way to victory on Stage 6 of the Tour de San Luis on Saturday.

Teammate Daniel Diaz effectively sealed the overall victory in what has been an extremely profitable week's racing for the Brazilian team.

Six riders formed the day's breakaway which went clear shortly after the start in Achiras: Juan Arango (Colombia National Team), Antoine Duchesne (Europcar), Mattia Cattaneo (Lampre-Merida), Tom Danielson (Cannondale-Garmin), Pavel Kochetkov (Katusha) and Marco Canola (UnitedHealthcare).

At one stage they had built up an advantage of over five minutes but by the time the race passed through the village of Merlo the seconds were falling away rapidly.

Arango launched a solo attack on the ascent of Mirador El Sol, but the break was doomed and one by one the riders slipped back to the fractured peloton, Canola the last to fall with nine kilometres remaining.

A strong effort from Nairo Quintana (Movistar), the pre-race favourite, reduced the leading group on the road to just nine riders.

The Colombian might have expected to go on to win the stage, but it was Da Silva who danced up the 12% slopes of Filo Sierras Comechingones.

He crossed the line first to take the win ahead of Rodolfo Torres (Colombia), who held onto second place in the general classification. Race leader Diaz finished safely in third.

"It was a very hard and long climb, and it was even tougher because of all the wind," Diaz said.

"But I had phenomenal work from Kleber and that made it so much easier for me.

"In the finale, it was the two of us with Torres and Nairo, and it was hard work once it fragmented in the last kilometre."

The race concludes on Sunday with a 122.4 kilometre stage around San Luis.
