Newport County have completed the signing Danny Holmes from Tranmere Rovers, subject to a medical.
The 26-year-old rejected a new contract at Prenton Park, and new Newport boss Terry Butcher was quick to snap up the former TNS man.
The former England centre half spoke to the South Wales Argus, saying “Danny has agreed to sign, subject to a medical, and that solves a good problem area for us”.
He also added that Holmes has “good experience and he’s a good age”, and once he was made aware of the Exiles interest “he was desperate to sign”.
Birkenhead-born Holmes began his career with Tranmere, coming through the club’s academy system, and then being promoted to the first team.
After an initial two years as a first team squad member, featuring a loan spell at Southport, Holmes departed, and signed for Welsh Premier League side The New Saints.
After a three year spell in Oswestry, the full-back re-signed for Tranmere, and went on to make 127 league appearances, scoring four times.
His last season at Rovers ended in the Merseyside outfit being relegated from the Football League after a 94 year stay.
The Exiles new recruit took to Twitter to announce his transfer, saying “It’s with a heavy heart that I’m tweeting to say I’m leaving Tranmere. (I’ve) had some ups and downs but I love Tranmere and would love to eventually come back.”
He also added, “(I’m) exited about a new challenge with Newport County and (I’m) looking forward to getting down to South Wales and to get started and meet the fans!”
Exiles fifth summer signing
Right-back Holmes becomes County’s fifth summer signing, after the arrivals of goalkeeper Rhys Taylor and left-back Scott Barrow from Macclesfield Town.
Holmes also follows the signings of Lenell John-Lewis and Alex Rodman from Grimsby Town and Gateshead respectively.
Manager Terry Butcher is hoping to add more to his squad in the coming days and to finally announce his backroom team.
