Rochdale have rejected a bid from fellow League One side Barnsley for striker Ian Henderson, according to HITC Sport.

Henderson, who joined Dale from Colchester United in January 2013, was League One's second-top scorer as Rochdale just missed out on the play-offs last term.

Prior to his move to Colchester United in 2010, he was far from prolific with just eight goals scored in spells at Norwich City, Rotherham United, Northampton Town, Luton Town and Turkish side Anakargucu.

The goals have come in recent years

In his youth he earned three caps and scored one goal for England under-18s, before making the step-up to England under-20 where he earned just one cap.

During his time with Colchester he managed 24 goals in 118 appearances and since his arrival at Rochdale he has scored 36 goals in 101 appearances.

In pre-season he has picked up where he left off, bagging three goals so far including a brace in a 2-1 win over Championship side Blackburn Rovers.

Rochdale still face a battle to keep the forward with a number of Championship and League One thought to be keen on signing the 30-year-old.

They will be keen to keep their best player who was named as Keith Hill's best signing since he came into the club by the Manchester Evening News. In a review of last season the paper said: "His work-rate, professionalism and quality on the ball have defined exactly what this Dale team is all about."

Henderson's departure would spell trouble for Dale

Should he leave Rochdale, he will join Febian Brandy, Stephen Dawson, Bastien Hery, Sean McGinty and Jack Muldoon.

Rochdale may also struggle to replace him with the only strikers at the club being Calvin Andrew, Reuben Nobel-Lazarus, Donal McDermott, Nyal Bell and Joe Bunney, all of whom have struggled to match Henderson in terms of goalscoring.

Henderson should feature in Rochdale's game tonight at League Two side Accrington Stanley.
