Both sides experienced mixed fortunes last time out, but Sunday's showdown with Sampdoria will take on extra significance for Maurizio Sarri's men.

Sampdoria will head south to Naples to take on a Napoli side looking to record their first points of the campaign after an opening weekend defeat to Sassuolo in Serie A.

Sampdoria will be buoyed by their 5-2 desecration of Carpi last weekend, with the menacing attack duo of Luis Muriel and Eder both getting on the scoresheet.

Form

There was little to separate Napoli and Sassuolo last Sunday evening until Nicola Sansone popped up with seven minutes remaining to spoil the party.

Napoli had taken an early lead courtesy of Marek Hamsik inside three minutes -- netting the first goal of the 2015/16 season in Italy's top flight -- and, though they had rode their luck thereafter, it took a moment of sheer brilliance from Domenico Berardi and Antonio Floro Flores to cancel out the Slovakian's opener.

Sarri's side went close via Dries Mertens after the interval, but will be left to rue their defensive wobbles as Sansone ghosted in at the far post to nod into an empty net.

Walter Zenga, meanwhile, couldn't have asked for a better response to his side's inopportune Europa League exit.

Sampdoria struck five inside the opening 45 minutes against newsboys Carpi, with goals arriving from Luis Muriel (2) Eder (2) and Fernando.

David Ivan was dismissed midway through the second period to blemish an otherwise flawless domestic baptism for Zenga.

Previous meetings

Napoli hold the superior head-to-head record over their opponents on Sunday, having last tasted defeat against Sampdoria in May 2010 when Giampolo Pazzini struck midway through the second-half.

Encounters between these two sides usually throw up an abundance of goals, with Napoli having scored 12 times against the Blucerchiati in their previous five clashes.

Napoli ran out 4-2 victors when these sides last met, with Lorenzo Insigne's sumptuous long-range effort bettered by Luis Muriel's late consolation.

Team news

There are no notable absentees on the Napoli side, with Manolo Gabbiadini expected to partner Gonzalo Higuain at the tip of Sarri's attack.

Marek Hamsik is likely to continue in a deeper midfield role alongside Mirko Valdifiori and Allan, with Lorenzo Insigne deployed as a trequartista.

Sampdoria, meanwhile, will be without Lorenzo Di Silvestre through ligament damage.

Roberto Soriano, however, is expected to start after he was subject of a lucrative bid from Milan earlier this week.

Luis Muriel and Eder were mightily impressive in attack for Zenga's side last time out and will spearhead the attack once again in Naples.

Probable line-ups

Napoli (4-3-1-2): Reina; Hysaj, Albiol, Chiriches, Ghoulam; Valdifiori, Allan, Hamsik; Insigne; Gabbiadini, Higuain.

Sampdoria (4-3-1-2): Viviano; Cassani, Silvestre, Moisander, Zukanovic; Soriano, Fernando, Barreto; Correa; Eder, Muriel.

Ones to Watch

Napoli - Lorenzo Insigne

After an injury ravaged 2014/15 campaign, Insigne has been tipped to become Napoli's starman under Sarri, with the former Empoli boss planning to predicate his side around the creative juices of the diminutive midfielder. The Italian has the capacity to unlock a defence at the switch of a button, while retaining his sumptuous ability to ghost past opposing defenders. Supplying Higuain and Gabbiadini, a strikeforce as prolific as they come, Insigne could wreak havoc on a Sampdoria defence that leaked four against Serbian minnows FK Vojvodina last month.

Sampdoria - Luis Muriel

Earmarked by me, and many others presumably, for a fruitful goalscoring campaign, the Colombian kickstarted his first full season in Sampdoria colours with a brace against Carpi on opening weekend. Muriel dovetailed beautifully with Eder in attack and, while Carpi are by no means Juventus, their partnership bodes well for the remainder of the campaign. Napoli's defensive woes came to the fore last weekend at Sassuolo and Sarri's new look defensive pairing may be in for a tough evening with the perpetual movement of Muriel and his Italian cohort.
