Former Bolton Wanderers and Chesterfield forward Kevin Davies is in talks with current club Preston North End over a new contract in a player-coach role, according to The Bolton News.

Davies scored just once in 30 appearances in all competitions as Preston were promoted to the Sky Bet Championship this season and, at 38, his playing career is finally coming to a conclusion.

The one-time England international made his first-team debut for Chesterfield in 1993, and made a name for himself as one of the most aggressive forwards in the Premier League, most notably with Bolton.

And now, Lilywhites manager Simon Grayson has announced that Davies is set to extend his time with the club, if in a significantly different role.

"We are in discussions with Kevin Davies about a role at the football club in terms of playing and possibly a coaching capacity," he told the club's official website.

Preston target Beckford stay

Grayson has also stated that he would like to keep on-loan forward Jermaine Beckford at the club. The former Leeds United man scored a hat-trick in the League One play-off final at Wembley, and is now a free agent following the expiry of his contract at Bolton.

"I have made it quite public that I would like to retain Jermaine Beckford so negotiations will be taking place with the relevant parties," Grayson continued.

While it had been reported that Leeds United could be interested in bringing the 31-year-old back to Elland Road, manager Uwe Rösler is thought to prefer other options as he looks to strengthen his side.
