Preston North End officially announced the signing of Greg Cunningham yesterday afternoon after the final details of the move were completed.

The left-back has signed a two-year contract after moving for an undisclosed fee from Bristol City and could make his debut for the club in tonight's friendly with Carlisle United.

The 24-year-old, who has been capped four times by the Republic of Ireland, began his career at Manchester City.

He joined the Robins in 2012 after spells out on loan at Leicester City and Nottingham Forest.

Preston were made to wait

Cunningham becomes manager Simon Grayson's third permanent signing of the summer, following the arrivals of Jermaine Beckford and Paul Gallagher, as well as the loan capture of Manchester United youngster Will Keane.

A deal had been announced as imminent at the weekend, but at lunchtime on Monday there had been no official confirmation from the club. Cunningham had been with the club over the weekend, however, and his signing was confirmed on Monday afternoon.

The 24-year-old revealed how the need to play regular first team football motivated him to leave Bristol City for Preston North End.

Talking to the Bristol Post, Cunningham explained why he had to call time on his City career, saying that his opportunities at the club had been "limited" and with only a year left on his contract, he was looking to "get out and get games".

He continued, saying how manager Grayson had played a big part in his move and that he was "delighted" to have signed on at the club.

Grayson is glad to have him on board

Grayson too was pleased to get the deal sorted: "What you find with Greg is that he is a really good age, but he is experienced as well.

"He has played for some good clubs, big clubs, knows the Championship and was part of a winning mentality at Bristol City last year.

"We are very pleased to have got him; he's desperate to do well for Preston North End and try and get back into the Ireland squad and if he does that, hopefully it means we are doing well."
