Preston North End have announced the signing of goalkeeper Chris Kirkland on a one year deal after his departure from Sheffield Wednesday.

The 34-year-old stopper rejected the opportunity to stay at the Sheffield club, with Kirkland citing his desire to “try something new”.

Veteran Kirkland began his career at Coventry City, making his debut for the Sky Blues in 1998. In 2001 Merseyside giants Liverpool came calling. But after five years at Anfield and only 25 league appearances, Kirkland joined Wigan Athletic where he cemented a number one spot.

Speaking to the Preston North End official website, Kirkland said “I’ve been in the game a long time  and I know a lot about Preston North End’s history and a great club it is.

The one time England capped keeper also expressed his delighted that his move to Deepdale "has been sorted out”.

Grayson delighted with the deal

North End manager Simon Grayson also spoke to the club’s website about the capture of Kirkland. The 45 year old believes that Kirkland will “help with our younger goalkeepers in the squad.”

Grayson spoke of his belief in getting the right balance between youth and experience. The Lilywhites have already brought in 21 year old Jordan Pickford on loan from Sunderland, who started the first league game against Middlesbrough last Saturday, which ended 0-0.

“We are trying to get the right balance right the way through the squad of young players with youthful exuberance," said Grayson, before adding that "but also have some lads that have been there and done it and can guide the younger players”.

Signing number six at Deepdale

Kirkland becomes Preston North End’s sixth summer signing, following the arrivals of Jermaine Beckford, Paul Gallagher Greg Cunningham, Will Keane and Jordan Pickford from Bolton Wanderers, Leicester City,Bristol City, Manchester United and Sunderland respectively.

Kirkland will miss this evenings (Wednesday) Capital One Cup tie against Crewe Alexandra, but is in contention to make his debut away to MK Dons in Preston’s first away league game of the season.
