Chris Wood struck a stunning late goal as Leeds United got their first win of the new Championship season away to Derby County, who are still without a victory under the Paul Clement regime.

Tom Adeyemi nodded the visitors into the lead at the end of a first half which they had almost totally dominated, before Chris Martin equalised with a well-taken individual effort shortly into the second.

But with both sides looking on course to add yet another draw to their respective records this season, Wood curled a stunning effort in off the post from outside the area with just two minutes of the 90 remaining.

Visitors dominate proceedings in first half

Leeds came out of the blocks the quickest in the opening minutes and saw an early opportunity for Wood fired first-time over the bar, before a short stoppage as Richard Keogh received treatment an a new shirt following a cut to the head.

The away side continued to forge the greater number of opportunities as Wood again went close with a deflected effort which bounced marginally past the post before new signing Stuart Dallas smashed an effort well over the bar from the resulting corner kick.

Derby's first real spell of pressure came with almost half an hour played as the in-form Johnny Russell found Martin in space inside the area, but the Scottish targetman's shot was charged down. The two combined again moments later as Russell picked out Martin again from a free kick, but his glancing header dropped wide of the post.

Young midfielders Lewis Cook and Alex Mowatt were looking assured in the centre of the park for Leeds and both almost crafted goalscoring opportunities with the first half wearing on. However, after half-chances at either end for Martin and Wood, it was a combination of lax defending and a deadly delivery which brought the opening goal.

Goals either side of the interval

Former Brentford winger Dallas exchanged passes at the edge of the area following a short corner before delivering a looping cross towards the edge of the six-yard box. With little in the way of marking going on within the Derby defence, Adeyemi ghosted across a defender before flicking a header just inside the right post.

Despite Leeds' first-half dominance, Uwe Rösler saw his side pegged back within the first five minutes of the second period as Martin scored his 50th Derby goal. With his back to goal he feinted one way before turning the other, past his marker and driving the ball into the bottom corner with his powerful left boot.

They almost made it two soon after as midfielder Jeff Hendrick broke through only to be smothered out by a combination of goalkeeper and defender. Tom Ince and the livewire Russell went close shortly after the hour mark with Clement introducing summer signings Andreas Weimann and Darren Bent to the fray in hope of finding a first winner of the campaign for the pre-season promotion favourites.

Superb Wood strike earns a merited victory

Chris Wood looked to be having a frustrating afternoon as he headed over once again from Mirco Antenucci's cross, but with 88 minutes played he had his reward.

He received the ball from Cook with his back to goal at the edge of the D and took one touch to the right to lay himself off before searing a thunderous effort around the flat-footed Scott Carson and in off the near post. Despite five minutes of added time at the end, Derby hardly fashioned another opportunity and the visitors held on for a deserved win.

The result leaves Derby with just four points from their first five league games, with Leeds three better off on seven points thanks to their win today.
