Calum Woods has signed a new two-year deal with Preston North End.

The defender has been an integral part of the one of the Championship's strongest defences this season, helping them keep six clean sheets in his 10 appearances, and his displays have been rewarded with a new contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2018.

Only five teams have conceded fewer goals than the Lilywhites in the 2015-16 campaign so far, and all of those teams currently sit in the top seven, so it comes as little surprise that Preston are keen to keep their strong back line together, tying down Woods.

Player pleased to extend Deepdale stay

Speaking to the club's official website about his new deal, the 28-year-old said that he is "delighted" to have put pen to paper and that he is "looking forward" to the next two years at Deepdale, which will include continuing to work with "a great group of lads and staff".

The defender remained focused on the now though, saying that the team are keen to "continue" the "good run" they are on "at the minute" when Championship action resumes at the weekend, having been on a two week international break.

Manager sings praise for Woods

Having decided to offer Woods a new deal, Preston manager Simon Grayson had plenty to say about the player when speaking to the club's official website too.

Grayson described Woods as "the type of player that managers love" because he can play "wherever" and still "do a good job," with him having operated "at left back at Wembley" when the team got promoted from League One last season, and "at centre half and right back" already this year.

The manager added that he and the club are "delighted" that the defender has "extended his stay" and that they are already "look[ing] forward to continuing to work with him".
