Crystal Palace 0-2 West Brom: Pulis halts in-form Eagles as Baggies resillient

Tony Pulis returned to his former club, Crystal Palace, to win despite Palace dominating the game. An early goal from James Morrison started the scoring before Craig Gardner scored a stunning 30-yard strike.

West Brom were resilient and counter attacked impressively to shock an in-form Crystal Palace and leave Selhurst Park with a 2-0 victory.

Tony Pulis' side secured their first win in over a month over a Palace side looking to win their 5th game in a row, a record for the club.

James Morrison gave the Baggies the best start you could imagine away from home at Selhurst Park with a bullet header past Julian Speroni in the second minute.

Craig Gardner followed it up with a second for Pulis' side on his old ground, a stunning strike that matched the power of Morrison's header earlier. The 28-year-old lashed it past Speroni.

Palace dominated the game from Morrison's goal to Gardner's and throughout but an awful day in front of goal from Glenn Murray, so prolific in recent weeks, meant West Brom returned home with the three points.

The win for Tony Pulis' side, previously threatened with relegation, means they should see out the rest of the season safely. Palace can't be too disheartened with the result. Yannick Bolasie was in brilliant form on the flank, providing chance after chance for Murray who was beaten in a battle with Baggies keeper Myhill. The Eagles stay in 11th despite the loss and despite Everton's 1-0 win over Burnley.

West Brom started the game in stunning fashion. Saido Berahino earned a corner in the second minute and an unmarked James Morrison unleashed a bullet of a header past Speroni. Morrison's finish from Chris Brunt's delivery was only the 10th goal away from home for the Baggies this season.

Palace responded well to going down early on, storming up the other end to earn a free-kick but Glenn Murray, coming into the game in sublime form, blasted an opportunity over.

Probing and piling on the pressure on a Tony Pulis side always proves far easier than actually breaking through. Palace did break through occasionally though, their attacking players who have shined since Pardew taking over, missing chances. James McArthur cut inside from the right to curl one back towards himself but Myhill smothered it well.

While Palace continued to attack a rare chance for West Brom and Anichibe was denied as the 26-year-old appeared to be pushed over by Mile Jedinak. Yet Jon Moss didn't appreciate the Nigerian's shouts and waved play on.

Yannick Bolasie, already proving himself to be a vital player for Palace, continued his fine form - bringing Palace back into the game. From close range and then outside of the box and then an impressive overhead kick attempt, Myhill kept him out.

Wilfried Zaha had his own penalty shout, smashed to the ground but once more Jon Moss waved the claims away to equal the denied penalty count.

As so often with Tony Pulis' Crystal Palace last season, Tony Pulis' West Brom defended resolutely. Joel Ward and Wilfried Zaha combined well on their flank while Bolasie continued to storm down the other side.

Despite evolving into the better team Palace couldn't get rid of the deficit before half time and made two switches at half time. The introduction of both Dwight Gayle and Pape Souaré for Mile Jedinak and Joe Ledley let them change system to 4-4-2.

Zaha had his second penalty shout of the day turned down as he was manhandled by Craig Gardner. Selhurst Park screamed in despair as Jon Moss played on once more.

Palace's attempts didn't die down after another turned down penalty and they peppered Myhill with stops to make and make them he did. Yet on the break West Brom provided something special to take the possibility of 5 wins in a row even further from Palace.

Gardner, the offender for the most recent penalty shout, lashed home from 30 yards after Palace messed about in clearing the corner. Speroni could have magically become Gianluigi Buffon and struggled to stop Gardner's strike, a contender for goal of the week.

While Bolasie had a stormer, Glenn Murray had a day to forget. After a run of 6 games including 6 goals and 3 assists for Murray, he couldn't hit a barn door. Dwight Gayle provided him with a chance but he could only hit Myhill's post.

Myhill was back in action with Murray in minutes, picking the ball off Murray's head from a Jason Puncheon free-kick.

Craig Dawson was forced off with an injury caused by Yannick Bolasie who subsequently received a booking.

Joel Ward took control of the flank to become Palace's main attacking outlet, forcing McAuley to step up his game. Puncheon was shifted forward in a desperate attempt to grab a goal back and almost hit the bar within moments in his new role.

Pardew introduced Yaya Sanogo to push further forward while Pulis brought on Jonas Olsson to sure things up at the back in the dying minutes.

Another missed chance for Murray had his head in his hands as Bolasie cut inside and provided a sublime cross only for his teammate to head over the crossbar.
