Özil has worked with some success under the shadows of Schweinsteiger, Kroos and Khedira respectively.

Özil has been one of the best passers across the board for Germany averaging 88% completion across the six fixtures. Özil's best pass completion rate came in Germany's 4-0 thrashing of Portugal in which he completed 92% of his attempted passes. Even his worst pass completion rate of 82% in Germany's second game with Ghana is still good going.

Özil has found the net once so far in the tournament, that goal coming from close range against Algeria in the round of 16. Furthermore Özil has directly set-up once in the tournament, the assist coming in Germany's historical 7-1 victory over hosts Brazil. Özil's other strengths lie in his set-piece taking, crosses and dribbling.

Özil's main weakness lies in his defensive contribution in which he does very little to win the ball back or track back. During the tournament he has managed little over a tackle a game and is yet to make any interceptions or clearances in the defensive third.

The midfielder has came under much scrutiny while wearing the Germam shirt and as recently as the start of the tournament spoke out against the messages :

"I am no longer a talent but an experienced player who has played in three countries. I take responsibility," Ozil told Sport Bild.

"The FA Cup win means that I have won three finals. I was voted Germany player of the year three times running and in the team of the year in England - always by the fans - and that is also important to me.

"I feel that I have the trust of Joachim Low and Arsene Wenger and that I have earned it.

"I am now 25 years old and at that age every footballer in the world plays in a different way to what he did when he was 21.

"And, of course, my role at Arsenal is different in so much that I have more responsibility than I did at Real [Madrid]. And I like that."

His role is yet again different in the Germany set-up so you can't help but feel sorry for someone who is getting shuffled about and played out of position.

Özil has played the full ninety twice and featured from the first whistle in the 120 minutes against Algeria. In the opener Özil was replaced after an hour and in the remaining two he was ejected from the field of play within the last ten minutes.

Jogi Löw and the German faithful will be hoping Özil can have a similar game to how he played against Algeria where he was arguably one of if not the best performer on the pitch. As previously mentioned Özil got on the scoresheet on that occasion. Stats wise, he was sound. 2 of his 3 shots found the target one of which was his goal, he created 4 chances all of which were key. In addition to this 88% of his passes found the intended target. Most of his passes were within the fifteen metre range as he found himself almost glued to the centre of the pitch bar an occasional dart forward. He also won an impressive 3 take-on attempts which shows another dimension to his play.

Whether Özil will be given the full game is anybody's guess but one thing for sure is his work in amongst the other midfielders deserves more credit than what is given.
