Atletico Madrid

Thibaut Courtois - 6/10

The young Belgian was starved of action but retained his concentration well to gather with ease from Fernando Torres and Frank Lampard. The 21 year-old was seemingly unfazed by controversy of him facing his parent club and was an imposing presence in his area.

Juanfran - 6/10

The Spaniard provided an offensive option on the right flank and delivered a couple of decent, teasing crosses into the Chelsea box. He was rarely troubled by Willian with the Brazilian focused largely on his defensive duties.

Miranda - 4/10

The Brazilian struggled against Torres's pacey springs forward and resorted to cynical challenges to contain the striker.

Diego Godin - 5/10

The Uruguayan was much more accomplished than his centre-half partner but did not threaten from set-pieces as usual.

Filipe Luis - 6/10

The Brazilian was a threat on the left flank as he retained his propensity to provide an attacking option.

Gabi - 5/10

The Atletico captain failed to influence proceedings as he would have hoped, his most prominent role being forcing Mark Schwarzer into a good stop from a well-struck costless-kick. Picked up a needless yellow card towards the match's conclusion which rules him out of the return leg at Stamford Bridge.

Mario Suarez - 5/10

The Atletico midfielder did not play a pivotal role in the game and his selection, in preference of former Chelsea man Tiago, was a surprise. Shot in the first-half tricked just wide.

Raul Garcia - 5/10

The Spaniard was a menace in the air but failed to take advantage of his height, frequently heading over the crossbar.

Jorge Koke - 6/10

Highly-rated midfielder struggled to impose his creativity on the match at first but was prominent in the second period as he thread intelligent balls through for those before him.

Diego Ribas - 5/10

The Brazilian attacking midfielder struggled to find space in-behind Luiz, Lampard and Mikel and his contribution was limited.

Diego Costa - 4/10

The Spain international, reportedly destined for Stamford Bridge in the summer, was profligate and uncharacteristically wasteful from good positions.

Subs:

Arda Turan - 5/10

The Turkey international and a reported target for Liverpool came on on the hour-mark, returning from a three-week injury spell, but did not influence the outcome.

Sosa - 5/10

Did not have enough time to trouble Chelsea but he got in-behind Ashley Cole and crossed for Raul Garcia who headed over the crossbar.

Chelsea

Petr Cech - N/A

The Czech Republic goalkeeper did not produce a save and was replaced after 17 minutes, having collided with Garcia. His injury will be of great concern for Jose Mourinho ahead of his side's trip to Anfield on Sunday.

Cesar Azpilicueta - 6/10

The Spaniard was solid and contained the threat posed by Atletico's wing contingent.

John Terry - 7/10

The Blues skipper, along with Gary Cahill, nullified Diego Costa efficiently but was withdrawn after sustaining an ankle injury.

Gary Cahill - 7/10

The England defender stifled Costa proficiently, as did Terry, with the solid duo ultimately forcing the Spain striker into moving wide to involve himself in the game.

Ashley Cole - 6/10

There was speculation as to whether Cole would be snubbed by Mourinho but the England full-back enhanced his case for a World Cup berth in effective fashion.

David Luiz - 7/10

The Brazilian was assertive and produced a couple of decisive interventions. As he has so often do so in the Champions League this season, the 27 year-old, celebrating his 27th birthday with Mikel, ditched his high-octane tendencies to produce a disciplined performance.

John Obi Mikel - 8/10 (Man of the Match)

His selection was a slight surprise but the Nigerian international was excellent throughout, his defensive headers and contributions countless. Mourinho will face a selection headache in the return leg with both Lampard and Mikel suspended and Nemanja Matic ineligible.

Willian - 7/10

Mourinho's preference in the Brazilian rather than Juan Mata was justified here with a disciplined, tireless display, covering Cole superbly.

Frank Lampard - 6/10

The England midfielder denied Diego Ribas space in which to wreak havoc but was fortunate to be spared a second yellow card after a deliberate handball. He will miss the return leg regardless through suspension.

Ramires - 6/10

Like Willian, the Brazil midfielder was disciplined in carrying out his defensive duties. With his wonderful energy and speed, the midfielder posed a threat in counter-attack scenarios, supporting Torres well.

Fernando Torres - 7/10

One of the Spaniard's most impressive performances this season. He held up the ball well, embarked on several mazing runs and rattled Miranda.

Subs:

Mark Schwarzer - 6/10

The Australian profited from his game-time against Sunderland on Saturday and upon replacing Cech, his handling and judgement were impeccable.

Andre Schurrle - 5/10

The German attacker replaced the injured Terry but his role was to contain the likes of Koke and Diego Ribas than pose a threat himself.
