Everton are in the market for at least one new central defender and it is expected that Crystal Palace's Scott Dann is a name that interests Roberto Martinez.

After a disappointing season Everton are in need of defensive reinforcements, and this has become vital with the news that the club have decided against extending Sylvain Distin's and Antolin Alcaraz's contracts as the Merseyside club submitted their retained and released lists for next season.

Martinez is also interested in Manchester United's Jonny Evans but the Everton manager sees Dann as a more realistic target for this summer.

In fine form

Dann was in fine form for Alan Pardew's Crystal Palace last season and won the club's Player of the Season award - and the defender has two years remaining on his current contract.

It is unclear how much it would take to lure Dann away from Selhurst Park but it is understood that he is keen on returning back to the north-west of England.

The 28 year old central defender would add some much needed physicality to the Toffees' back four, who shipped 50 goals in 38 Premier League games last season, which saw them eventually finish 11th with 47 points.

Light at the back

The departure of Distin and Alcaraz leaves the Toffees incredibly light of central defenders, but adding Scott Dann would be a good start in addressing the need for some experience in the back four.

Dann was ever present for Crystal Palace last season making 34 appearances in which they kept seven clean sheets and conceding 51 goals throughout the whole Premier League campaign.

Pardew's Liverpool-born central defender won 19 tackles last season with a success rate of 32%, made 54 interceptions, 223 clearances and 34 blocks.

Any move to Goodison Park would see him compete for a starting place with the experienced Phil Jagieka and the very impressive John Stones.
