Everton have completed the signing of striker Leandro Rodriguez for an undisclosed fee from River Plate Montevideo.

The Uruguayan has signed a four-year contract which will keep him at Goodison Park until June 2019.

Who is Leandro Rodriguez?

Rodriquez was born in Montevideo but also holds an Italian passport and has only played for his hometown club, River Plate Montevideo.

He made his debut in August 2012 and has scored 19 goals in 71 appearances in the Uruguay top division.

Last season was his most successful scoring nine goals in 23 games for River Plate.

His older brother, Diego Rodriguez is also a professional footballer, who has played for La Liga side Malaga. He is currently on loan at MLS side Vancouver Whitecaps.

Everton manager Roberto Martinez described Rodriguez as "a young striker with a real knack of scoring goals."

Another exciting talent

At 22-years-old Roberto Martinez said that Rodriguez is "one of those elite, talented youngsters" who the club "like to bring" to Goodison Park.

Martinez added that he does not want to put "pressure" on the Uruguayan but "he is a player we can be very much excited about in the future."

Everton have signed a number of promising, talented young players over recent years including first team regular John Stones, Brendan Galloway and Tyias Browning, who have both played for the first team this season.

The club have also signed 19-year-old striker David Henen from Olympiacos and 18-year-old defender Mason Holgate from Barnsley this summer.

He could feature for the first-team

Martinez believes Rodriguez can make an immediate impact in the first-team as he thinks the striker has "played enough games" with River Plate Montevideo in what Martinez described as a "really competitive league."

"If you look at the amount of strikers that come through these environments, you don't get surprised about the quality of these players," Martinez added.

Martinez is hoping Everton can "provide a path" where Rodriguez can "develop and enjoy his football...if he can do that, clearly that's going to bring goals to the first team."

Will there be anymore signings?

Rodriguez becomes Everton's fifth summer signing with Tom Cleverley, Gerard Deulofeu, David Henen and Mason Holgate all arriving at Goodison Park and with still a few days left before the transfer window shuts on Tuesday 1 September it is likely there will be more arrivals.

The Uruguayan looks set to be joined at Everton by fellow South American Ramiro Funes Mori. Everton have agreed a £5.5 million fee for the Argentinian defender with River Plate but they are just waiting for international clearance to complete the signing.

Roberto Martinez is also hopeful of completing one more signing before the transfer window shuts, with Dynamo Kiev playmaker Andriy Yarmolenko, Dortmund winger Jakub Blaszczykowski and Sevilla forward Juan Munoz all linked, as Martinez continues to bolster his attacking options.
