Both sides would have hoped for better starts to the season, having each won just one of their first four Premier League games.

Everton will be hoping that a victory against the defending champions could kick-start their campaign, as they look to improve on last season's disappointing 11th place finish.

Everton have already got one over Jose Mourinho after successfully fending off interest from Chelsea for defender John Stones this summer. The Toffees rejected three bids from Chelsea but Roberto Martinez said that he has no problem picking Stones for the clash.

Will it be another thriller?

Last season's meeting between the two sides at Goodison Park turned out to be a thriller, with the visitors securing a 6-3 victory, largely thanks to a Diego Costa hat-trick.

Chelsea have won their last three matches against Everton, and five of the last six, with the Toffees' only league win coming in their 1-0 victory in 2013.

However, Everton have beaten Chelsea in four of the last six encounters played at Goodison Park.

Everton looking to kick-start their campaign

It has been a mixed start to the season for Everton, with one win, two draws and a defeat from their opening four games.

However, Martinez will be hoping to pick up the points before matches against Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal in October and also face tricky away trips to Swansea City and West Bromwich Albion in the coming weeks.

Everton have kept clean sheets in half of their opening four games, including one last time out against Tottenham Hotspur thanks to a man-of-the-match performance by Tim Howard.

However, the Toffees have not been prolific enough in front of goal in recent matches and have failed to score in their last two games. The last time they failed to score in three successive league fixtures was in April 2006.

One man who will be hoping to get on the score sheet on Saturday will be striker Romelu Lukaku. The Belgian had an unsuccessful spell at Stamford Bridge, scoring one goal in 15 appearances for Chelsea, and spent two seasons on loan at West Brom and Everton before moving to Goodison Park permanently in 2014.

Will there be fireworks?

Meetings between Everton and Chelsea can get heated, with four red cards being handed out in the last 10 meetings. Gareth Barry was sent-off in the last meeting between the two sides after picking up two yellow cards at Stamford Bridge in February.

It might not only be on the pitch that tempers are frayed after Roberto Martinez and Jose Mourinho both clashed in the summer over Chelsea's pursuit of John Stones.

The Everton boss was critical of Chelsea after the London club made it openly clear that they wanted to sign Stones.

Mourinho defended the club's actions, insisting that Chelsea had done nothing wrong. However, the Chelsea boss may not get the kindest of receptions at Goodison Park on Saturday after dismissing Everton as a "smaller club".

Martinez was also unhappy at Diego Costa in Chelsea's 6-3 victory over Everton last August and he also complained about the Chelsea players surrounding the referee in the reverse fixture in February.

The opponents

Although we are only four games into the season, Chelsea know that anything less than three points could be fatal to their chances of retaining the Premier League title.

The champions have made their worst start to a season in 20 years and only Blackburn Rovers (three) in 1995 had fewer points at this stage of the season than Chelsea's current tally of four after winning the Premier League the previous season.

Mourinho's side arrive at Goodison Park off the back of a defeat to Crystal Palace, which is only Chelsea's second defeat under Mourinho at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho will be hoping Chelsea do not make it two league defeats on the trot, a feat he has not suffered with Chelsea since May 2006.

Chelsea have a number of players who are all capable of causing the Toffees problems. One player to watch is summer signing Pedro. The forward has already made an impact at Chelsea since joining from Barcelona. He scored the opening goal on his debut in their 3-2 victory over West Brom and has assisted two in his first two games.

However, Everton can exploit Chelsea, with the Premier League champions conceding nine goals already this season (five more than Everton). It is the most at this stage of the season since 1971-72 when they conceded 10.

Team News

Everton will be without Tom Cleverley, who could miss up to eight weeks, after he damaged his ankle ligaments in the goalless draw with Tottenham Hotspur, just before the international break.

The midfielder is joined on the sidelines by Leighton Baines, Darron Gibson, Steven Pienaar and Tony Hibbert.

Bryan Oviedo (knee) is a doubt but Brendan Galloway (knee) is fit and could start at left-back.

New signings Aaron Lennon, who returned to Goodison Park on transfer deadline day from Tottenham, Ramiro Funes Mori, who became Everton's most expensive defender in the club's history after joining from River Plate, and striker Leandro Rodriguez could all feature.

Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois requires knee surgery so Asmir Begovic will continue to deputise in goal.

Oscar misses out because of injury but captain John Terry returns to the squad following a one-match suspension.
