Liverpool and Manchester City face off this weekend. This fixture has been played 162 times, but this fixture has more riding on it than ever before. A Liverpool win opens up a seven point gap between them and their opponents, a win would give Liverpool a five point lead ahead of second place Chelsea. If Manchester City win they would over take Chelsea and go one point ahead of Chelsea and one point behind Liverpool, and still have a game in hand.

At Anfield the tie has been played eighty times. Liverpool have won 58 times, Manchester City have won 13 times and 19 draws between the two sides. Manchester City are just one goal away from scoring 100 goals, whereas Liverpool are one goal from scoring 170 goals against Manchester City at Anfield.

The very first meeting between the two sides was in 1893/84 back when Manchester City were the famous Ardwick. Liverpool scraped through winning 1-0 away from home.

The last meeting between the two came on Boxing Day this season, Manchester City edged the game 2-1 in a controversial clash between the two sides. Goals from Negredo and Kompany for the home side, Coutinho getting the goal to give the home fans a scare.

The last meeting at Anfield finished 2-2. Liverpool had the lead until Martin Skrtel played a blind pass back to Pepe Reina that was picked off by Carlos Tevez who capitalised and stole a point infront of the Kop with ten minutes to play. Liverpool finished seventh in the Premier League behind bitter rivals Everton and Manchester City finished second behind Manchester United by eleven points.

The biggest win for Liverpool at Anfield against Manchester City came in the 1995/96 season, Liverpool won 6-0, Ian Rush (2), Redknapp, Fowler (2) Ruddock the scorers in the emphatic win and at the end of that very season, The Citizens were relegated into Division 1.

City’s biggest win at Anfield came in the 1929/30 season when they beat Liverpool 1-6. That same season City went on to finish third in Divison 1 and Liverpool slumped to twelfth in the table.

In the 163rd tie between these two English giants, whoever goes grabs the points will surely have a strong hold on the Premier League, will take some stopping and will put pressure on the other teams challenging for coveted Premier League trophy.
