The Croat is due for medicals over the weekend in Liverpool.  The deal for Lovren, 25, if completed will be the first defensive addition in very active transfer season for the club.  The defense of Liverpool frustrated the club's title ambition last season and it is expected that they will strengthen significantly in that area this transfer window.  Lovren is seen as a player with the ability and leadership to bring defensive solidity to Liverpool next season.

After rejecting a number of bids for their defender, Southampton has agreed to part with their central defender in exchange for £20 million according to Ben Smith of the BBC.  That represents a decent profit for a player they got from Lyon for around £9 million last summer.  Lovren has not hidden his desire to move to Liverpool, handing in a transfer request and famously declaring that his “head was already at Anfield”

With a deal for Lovren close to completion, Liverpool will seek to add left and right full backs with  Javier Manquillo, Alberto Moreno and Ryan Bertrand some of the  names linked with the club.
