No-one quite knew how Fernando Torres' return to Anfield as a player representing the home side would pan out.

But when the former Liverpool hero stepped back on to the turf alongside Luis Suarez at the start of the second-half for the Liverpool FC Foundation's All-Star charity match on Sunday, Torres was clearly taken aback.

Whilst it was Suarez, who almost spearheaded Brendan Rodgers' men to their first ever Premier League title almost a year ago, who received the loudest cheers and applause, the Spanish striker admits he was moved by the Kop's reception.

Having left the Reds in the closing hours of the January transfer window four years ago for league rivals Chelsea, Liverpool fans have since seen 'El Nino' as a judas - but those feelings seemed to have been all forgotten in a memorable occasion.

The famous Number Nine chant could be heard ringing around Anfield after his introduction, and Torres was extremely thankful for the way in which he was greeted.

"It was just very emotional," Torres told LFCTV after the game. "I didn’t know how to react because I was not expecting them to sing the song which I still remember.

"I remember the great games we had here in the Champions League and trying to win the league and fighting for trophies. I have this song in my head and it was so important for me.

"Those three and a half years changed my entire life and I remember every important moment there was always that song from the Kop. So to hear that once again is something I will never forget.

"Everybody knows Liverpool fans are different class and for me today it is one of those things you can only dream about.

"It is just amazing to be able to be here and I just want to thank everybody for the welcome."

Torres, who now plays for his first club Atletico Madrid, whom he arrived on Merseyside from for a fee of £26 million back in 2007, revealed that there was no doubt in his mind as to whether he was going to take part when he received the invite from Steven Gerrard.

"It’s difficult to explain what you feel when you are in Anfield and playing a football match in Anfield," he said.

"It’s difficult to explain when you are playing for the home team, it’s a bit different when you are playing for the away team. But today was a day I will never forget for sure.

"It was so emotional to play again with my team-mates who we had such a great time playing for Liverpool together and especially the reaction of the supporters.

"I have said many times that Stevie is the best player I have played with ever and I don’t think I would play with a player like him again," Torres, who had a special bond with Gerrard in a red shirt, continued.

"He changed my game, the way I used to approach games, my ambition, everything, so when he called me to invite me to the game I said of course. I would have done anything to be here.

"All my great memories in my head are next to him. It was an important day for him so the least I could so was be here for him."
