Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson believes their win over Newcastle United put them back into top-four contention.

Back-to-back losses to Manchester United and Arsenal had put the Reds' Champions League hopes in jeopardy, but fourth-placed Manchester City's loss to rivals United on Sunday opened the door for Brendan Rodgers and co. to narrow the gap to four points.

Goals from Raheem Sterling and Joe Allen gave the Reds a deserved home win against the Magpies at Anfield on Monday and with just six points remaining, Henderson believes the Reds need to keep fighting.

"We knew it was an important game for us," Henderson said, speaking to Sky Sports One after the game. "Obviously the last couple of weeks in the Premier League have been disappointing both with performances and results.

"We knew today we needed to put that right and I think we did that with a great result for us."

The Reds had been amongst the favourites for the top-four after a 13-game unbeaten streak saw them close the gap to the likes of Arsenal and City after Christmas. But Henderson maintains that they have the capability to slender the gap again, with Manuel Pelligrini's side's inconsistent form.

"We’ve got ground to make up but we’ll just keep going, keep winning in games and putting in performances," said Henderson. "Come the end of the season, you never know."
