Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson has agreed an improved five-year contract with the club.

According to reports, the 24-year-old has already put pen to paper on the new deal worth around £100,000-a-week, though no official announcement has yet been made.

Talks opened late last year, but were stalled over the demand from Henderson's representatives for his wages to match his increased status and future role within Brendan Rodgers' team.

Henderson is widely expected to become the club's new full-time captain after the end of the 2014-15 campaign, replacing outgoing skipper Steven Gerrard, who is leaving for LA Galaxy of the MLS.

As a result, the midfielder who arrived from Sunderland for £20 million back in 2011 has been holding out for higher wages than the £80,000-a-week initially offered by the Reds.

But whilst Henderson's representatives had initially hoped to acquire £120,000-per-week wages for the player, they have finally reached an amicable agreement with the club.

The current Liverpool vice-captain was believed to be on a deal currently worth £60,000-a-week - but will now earn wages closer to that of the Reds' highest-earners, as he extends his future to the club until at least 2020.

The news comes as a huge boost for the club, who were recently sent crashing out of the FA Cup in the semi-final stage, scuppering their final hopes of silverware this season.

Rodgers' side have also had to deal with the ever-increasing transfer speculation revolving around the future of Henderson's teammate Raheem Sterling, who has delayed contract talks until the summer.

Henderson has scored seven goals in all competitions for Liverpool so far this season, his best ever tally for the club.
