Liverpool FC must step up as one to fill the void left by the departure of skipper Steven Gerrard, according to vice-captain Jordan Henderson.

The 34-year-old waved goodbye to Anfield on an emotional evening on Saturday, despite a disappointing 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace and will play his final game for the club this Sunday away at Stoke City.

With the long-time Liverpool servant switching Merseyside for Major League Soccer, Henderson is the favourite to take up the armband.

However, the midfielder believes that the entire squad need to come together to share the burden of expectation, as opposed to single-handedly looking for a Gerrard "replacement."

"I think it will be a huge loss for us not only as a player but a person with his aura around the place," said Henderson.

"But it is up to us as a team to step up to the plate and take responsibility, and not one individual.

"There will never be another player or person like him in terms of everything he stood for and how good he was as a player.

"But I still feel we have a lot of great players here with a lot of potential and we need to start showing that potential next season.

"We have hungry players who want to improve and do well and we have to make sure we are doing that next week and pre-season."
