Veteran centre-back Kolo Toure has signed a new one-year extension at Liverpool FC, the club have confirmed via Twitter.

The 34-year-old's contract was due to run out this summer, with supporters expecting the Ivorian to leave Merseyside - but the Reds decided to extend his Anfield stay by a further year.

The defender, formerly of Arsenal and Manchester City, has been at the club since 2013 when he joined a free trnasfer - playing on 45 occasions in all competitions over the last two years, as he nears towards 500 career appearances overall.

Toure, who helped lead his country to African Cup of Nations earlier this year but recently retired from international football, turns 35 before the start of 2015-16 but will provide vital experience in the absence of captain Steven Gerrard - who departs for MLS' LA Galaxy after playing his last game in a 6-1 loss to Stoke City.

The ageing centre-half has only played a bit-part role in the last 12 months, but will also help provide squad depth as the Reds take to the Europa League next term.

Toure, who played in 12 Premier League games and a couple of Champions League games last season, recently suggested that he would be "more than happy" to continue at Liverpool, insisting finishing his career at Anfield would be a great honour.

However, fellow teammates at Liverpool Glen Johnson and Brad Jones, also both out of contract this summer, will not be extending their stay in Brendan Rodgers' side.
