Roberto Firmino, who Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers named an "outstanding talent", is not a replacement for Raheem Sterling, the Northern Irishman has said.

The English international left for Manchester City in a £49 million transfer earlier this week, but the Brazilian forward - purchased for £29 million earlier in the window - will not serve as Sterling's successor.

Having been announced as the new no.11 at Anfield, highly-rated Firmino is one of several signings whom Liverpool supporters are excited to see in action.

After taking part in the Copa America alongside Philippe Coutinho, Firmino is still on his holidays but will join up with the squad on their pre-season tour in the next few weeks.

"He [Firmino] is not so much a direct replacement for Raheem, it is just about improving the squad," Rodgers said.

"We have brought in a number of really good players. If you add that to what we have already got [in the squad], the balance looks strong.

"There's not a need, I don't feel, to bring in a direct replacement for Raheem."

High hopes for Firmino on Merseyside

Firmino arrives from Bundesliga side Hoffenheim having contributed to 44 goals and assists in 66 games over the last two seasons, and Rodgers believes the attacker - who can play across the forward line - brings plenty to the table.

"His flexibility is important," Rodgers added. "He is an outstanding talent. He has got a wonderful touch and an appreciation for the game, but when you watch him the key is the determination and how hard he works.

"He can play on either one of the sides and he can also play through the middle or in behind [the striker].

"He is accustomed to European football so that should make the transition a little bit easier for him. He is a talented player who wants to score a goal.

Firmino's addition comes in a position in which Liverpool are arguably at their strongest, with Philippe Coutinho and Adam Lallana already vying for attacking midfield roles, but Rodgers is not concerned.

He said: "You need a good squad for all the competitions we're in.

"We have got two domestic cup competitions, the Europa League and the Premier League.

"If we want to fight on all fronts then we have to have a strong squad and I believe we are building a very strong squad."

Rodgers admits he could be why Sterling left, but denies any argument

Amidst Sterling's move to City, reports linked the 20-year-old's desire to leave Anfield as a result of a fall out with Rodgers - but the Reds boss insisted "nothing could be further from the truth."

"This is a kid I put into the team at 17 years of age," he said. "A wonderful talent. From that point, he and I worked very closely.

"I was probably one of a number of reasons why he was supposedly wanting to go.

"But it is done with now.

"He is a wonderful young kid. A young player out of the youth team who became a fully-fledged international footballer.

"He decided to move on and now he's a Manchester City player. For us it is about focusing on the players we have in our group."

Players still want to come to Anfield, insists Rodgers

But Rodgers is not worried that Sterling's departure, which follows the likes of Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez over the last 12 months, will set a precedent.

"Players will always want to come to Liverpool, I have said it many times," insisted the Northern Irishman.

"It is such an iconic club, a great club, but the modern game and the market now means that players will move on.

"Unfortunately, it is what you just have to accept. As long as you do everything you possibly can to keep the player, then that's all that you can ever do.

"The challenge for us is to get back in amongst the top teams in this division and hopefully that will continue to attract players."
