Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has explained the decision behind why the Reds chose not to sack Brendan Rodgers, and why he thinks the decision will prove the right one.

There was a huge question mark over the future of Rodgers at the end of last season, with the Ulsterman revealed to be flying in for crisis talks with the club's American owners, similarly to the talks Kenny Dalglish had before being sacked in 2012.

Coming off the back of a terrible season for Liverpool in which they finished a disappointing sixth in the Premier League, many expected him to go, however the decision was made that Rodgers would remain in his position.

A long term decision

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Werner explained that the owners preferred to take a "long-term view" when making their choices, and that FSG's "track record show they focus on stability".

Sacking Rodgers could have been a rash decision, coming a year after Liverpool's excellent 2013/14 season, and Werner looked back on that, saying that "We believed in Brendan when he won manager of the year" and reminded fans that it was "only a year earlier".

Naturally, fans and owners alike will be expecting to see an improvement in fortunes next season, especially after the faith shown to their current manager.

Werner explained that they "had some very constructive discussions with Brendan" and that he "expects to see a strong improvement".

Returning to the scene of the crime

That strong improvement could start on Sunday, as the Reds get their season underway with an away trip to the Britannia Stadium, where they'll face Stoke City.

It was at 'The Brit' last season, when Liverpool suffered their worst moment, being humiliated 6-1 on the final day. It was this result that led many to call for the head of Rodgers.

The chairman reflected on this saying "obviously the end of last season was very disappointing" and "it would be marvellous to take three points" this time around.

Much has been made over how Liverpool will set up and perform, and this is a topic which Werner is interested in too, saying that he's "looking forward" to seeing how the Reds play, and that he expects Rodgers' team to "make the supporters proud".
