Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli has secured a season-long loan deal with AC Milan after completing his medical on Tuesday morning.

The Italian returns to the Serie A outfit just a year on from his £16 million move to Liverpool and has had to take a pay cut from his £90,000-a-week wages in order to seal the move.

The lowered wages will be split between the Italian club and the Reds and he could make his debut as early as this weekend, with Siniša Mihajlović's side taking on Empoli

The ex-Manchester City striker, who also played at AC's rivals Inter Milan, scored an impressive 30 goals in 54 games in his last spell with the Rossoneri - which spanned 18 months.

Asked about the move, Balotelli said he "always had" AC Milan in his heart and admitted his desire to return to the club. He said he has to "start to work and have a good year" if he is to secure a permanent return to his homeland, and declared that he's highly-motivated and "looking forward" to training and proving his worth.

Balotelli took part in training for Milan on Wednesday morning, after it was revealed his former employers only re-signed him after asking him to stick to strict codes which include a ban on visiting nightclubs, smoking and "extravagant" hairstyles.

Loan move signals the end of disastrous Liverpool stay

Balotelli has regularly been labelled a maverick, having yet to find a stable club where he has maintained solid form. His off-field behaviours and general character has often seen him struggle to nail down a regular first-team place at any of the clubs he has played for.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers categorically denied any interest in Balotelli just weeks before he signed, with the Reds stuck between him or Samuel Eto'o in the final days of the 2014 summer window.

Described as a "calculated gamble" shortly after moving to Anfield, Balotelli provided promise alongside Daniel Sturridge away at Tottenham Hotspur on his debut, but flattered to deceive after the Englishman was kept out by injuries.

The 25-year-old failed pretty miserably in his first 12 months on Merseyside, scoring just one league goal in 16 appearances - whilst he only added three more in 12 displays in cup competitions.

By the time Sturridge returned, Balotelli had fallen well out of favour and as a result, he was not included in their pre-season tour of the Far East and Australia over the summer.

With Christian Benteke, Danny Ings, Roberto Firmino and Divock Origi all having arrived with the Reds to bolster their attacking options, Balotelli has been told he has no future in the first-team.

The loan move has no guaranteed clause which forces Milan to sign the striker next summer, but they are likely to have first choice on Balotelli should they wish to sign him. Almost certainly, his move signals the end for his short, and forgettable, Liverpool career.

He will now be looking to get back to his better goalscoring form as he vies to win a place in Antonio Conte's Italy squad for the 2016 European Championship in France.
