Joe Gomez has had a dream start to his Liverpool career but has been backed by fellow full-back Nathaniel Clyne to get even better over the next few years.

Brendan Rodgers signed the 18-year-old from Charlton Athletic in the summer for what in hindsight seems an absolute bargain, at £3.5 million.

And since he signed the defender has thrived - hitting the ground running on Liverpool's pre-season tour, and then starting in all three consecutive Premier League games so far this year, keeping a clean sheet in every game.

Gomez has versatility

Gomez - who played either as a centre-back or a right-back for Charlton last season, with the former recognised as his preferred position, has so far impressed in an unfamiliar role.

During the summer warm-up tour, he played as a left-back, and has continued to excel in that position, keeping natural left-sided defender Alberto Moreno out of the first team.

Rodgers will be delighted that he opted to keep him at the club, for the season ahead, rather than send him out on loan and Clyne, speaking to liverpoolfc.com, said he's "done excellently."

The England international, speaking about his compatriot who recently earned a first under-21s call-up, added that Gomez "has been working really hard" throughout the campaign.

Speaking about his versatility, Clyne said his abilities mean he can "play anywhere" across the back-four - which he labelled a good quality to have in the top-flight.

Gomez earned an England call-up

Gomez was one of the stand-out players in the game against Arsenal, during the 0-0 draw between the two clubs, helping to keep the hosts' attacking talents on the fringes of the game.

The following day, the England U21's squad was announced and Gomez was deservedly named amongst the list of Gareth Southgate's picks.

Clyne continued to say that Gomez has been "quality" in the way in which he has stepped up from the Championship to the Premier League, a transition which he said "can be difficult" - but claimed the teenager has emphatically "risen above" that challenge.

Though it is still early days for Gomez on Merseyside, the ex-Southampton defender stated that he looks like "a quality player" already, and one who "can only get better" with age.
